So who drives they're C32/C55 in the Winter (AKA Snow)?

I am wondering if this car can drive in the snow with a set of snow tires? I live in Rhode Island and snow can be a big problem at times, as specialy out in the boonies where I reside. I use to own a 2001 S4 and I had snow tires on it, now that was blast I am considering buying a late 90's A4 AWD, but I am leaning towards just a set of snow tires. What do you guy's/girl's think? Any experiences are welcome.

With snow tires and gentle use of the throttle in "C" mode, you should not have any problems in a city (like Toronto). The traction control and stability control does an amazing job of getting the car started and turning safely in slippery conditions. I can't comment on deep unshoveled snow in rural areas.

"PC Valkyrie" said it exactly, in winter drive in "C" comfort mode and with the help of traction control you'll be fine, trust me nothin's worse than Montreal in the winter and i managed to go through it smoothly!

I've only had it one winter and we had very little snow (DC area). But I have a dedicated set of wheels with winter tires. I also like to keep some extra weight in the trunk since these are front-heavy/rear wheel drive cars.

C55JMG, I would argue that Edmonton is easily worse than Montreal most winters .

You shouldn't have any problems with snow tires. There was a weekend where it snowed a ton and I had no problems. Didn't get stuck even when it snowed a foot in one day (I actually saw a slk 55 on the road that day too)

Our cars are decent on very light snow under four inches. Anything over that invest in a cell phone I tried driving in eight inches of snow and it wasn't pretty

I used to drive my CLK500 in the snow with Pilot Sport tires (summer tires). Driving was fine, the hard part was getting it up my driveway, lol. This fall I'm going to invest in a pair of winter tires.

i live in NY and although we dont get as much snow as some of you in canada, chicago or anywhere else - out here when it does snow it feels no pity. in that case i had a pretty scary experience my 1st winter with the C32 so i invested in snow tires...

i bought Dunlop Winter Sport M3s and mounted them on the stock 17" C32 wheels as my winter set. (got 18" brabus on toyos for the summer) and i must say it does its job well in snow and freezing rain. the only thing i dislike about them is the cornering/steering. it obvioulsy doesnt compare to summer tires like PS2s or T1Rs. On the days when there isnt any snow and i want to drive fast, it kinda keeps me from "fully" enjoying what the AMG was made to do.

not to bash the tires b/c they are exceptional in 2" of snow but unless you have snow every other day (in NY its really only a few days out of the whole 4-5 months of "snow" season) i think good "all seasons" should work just as well but i cant say for sure b/c i have yet to experience it - hope this helps some of you out - Adam

With a high powered rear wheel drive car like the C32/C55, dedicated snow tires are a MUST for the winter. Driving with the stock summer tires is just plain stupid...

Even with no snow on the ground, the summer tires don't have any grip at low temperatures because the rubber becomes too hard.

Drove my through the snow last year in MD/DC area. Got a new set of 17" rims and Bridgestone Blizzak LM25 and they were great. No problem with traction at all. I heard Dunlop M3 sport were better but the Bridgestones were fine.

I would recommend winter tires or the cae is not drivable in the winter!

Wow, I'm glad it doesn't snow here as my C32 was twitchy enough in the rain last winter .....

I live in Chicago and drove my C55 all last winter with no problem. I had Blizzaks front and rear and they worked just great. Don't forget winter floor mats.

I am from Niagara Falls Canada and I could not imagine my rare Tectite C32 even hitting snow . Its Garaged for the winter. But these cars are so fun to drive. Winter tires are a must. My cousin has a C230 and left his summer tires for the winter and wrecked them because of the cold temp. He tolled me it was stated in the MB manual about a freezing threshold temp. Hence that is why there are winter tires.

Valkyrie that is a nice colour on your C55. Hey you are from TO do u have a trusted mechanic in TO or just the regular MB dealership??

There is a very easy solution. Park the beast in the garage and pull out the ML350. That is what I do in Wisconsin.

Thanks for all of the feedback, it is much appreciated. It looks like I will be strapping on a set of snow tires come mid December.

I'm now using stock C32 rims with Blizzak LM25 tires. I'm very impressed with how the car behaves in the snow now. I was able to pull out of a deep snow pile with ice on the bottom with no problem. The combo of the tires and LSD works well. It's still not a 4x4, but compared to how it was with the PS2s . . .

I have a full set of snows, but this year I may just keep summer tires on and keep the C32 in the garage and take the "weekend car" (Audi TT) if/when it snows.

The only problem I've seen is that the summer tires get hard and slippery when it's really cold out.

I was planning on just using the Jeep when there is snow out, but the cold is the problem. Even when the roads are free of snow and ice, if it is freezing outside, the PS2s become solid rocks and have no traction

Just for kicks, last night (22 degrees), while sitting in bumper-to-bumper traffic on the DC Beltway, I did a moderately smokey burnout (brake/throttle). I wonder what the poor slob behind me was thinking! Summer tires are VERY brick-like when it gets cold.

I have a C32 with the stock 17" AMG wheels and Pirelli PZero Nero M&S (Mud and Snow) tires. They are great all-season tires that do reasonably well here in Chicago during the winter. Chicago and the suburbs do a decent job of clearing all snow as well as salting the roads (not good for the car though). Its rare that I am driving my C32 on snow. My observation is that the C32 holds up fine with A/S tires on <= 1" of snow. Anything more and you'll need to take it slow. As soon as the temp drops to 32F I keep the car in "W" winter mode full-time.

IMO the most important winter thing for these cars are the tires. Snow tires and A/S have a softer compound and larger tread for cold weather.
