muffler/resonator

ok guys i researched it and still lost or maybe didn't find proper thread the resonator is the muffler right? i went to a shop and thats what they told me. i am not a gear head so lost a little in that department. if i am wrong or right let me know. if i am wrong please link me a picture of what it is please. i am gonna research again.

The muffler is the rear portion of the exhaust that is closest to the bumper. The resonator (there are usually multiple) are the smaller chambers that are located in the middle of the piping to further reduce noise pollution. You can think of the resonators as smaller mufflers but the muffler and resonator are two distinct portions of the exhaust.

In the picture below, the muffler is the portion in the upper left and the resonators are the two rectangular pieces on the right:

The resonator is roundish and about the size of two loaves of bread stacked long ways. It will be located dead center of the car. At least that is where it is on mine.

Keep in mind a few people like to refer to resonators as cats and catylic converters as secondary cats.

just to clarify this statement...a resonator is not a cat/catalytic converter...a resonator's sole purpose is to reduce noise, that is it...a cat is designed soley to reduce emissions, that is it...

Never heard anyone refer to them as that. That is also flat out incorrect
