AMG 6 piston brake upgrade???

For the last year I've been thinking about updating my 2005 W203 brakes to AMG. For the front 6 piston AMG brakes, here was the quote from last year for just the calipers:

Part # Description Price (US$)
002-420-20-83 Left Front 6P Caliper 421.80
002-420-19-83 Right Front 6P Caliper 421.80

A couple of days ago I got another quote from the MB dealer and they said there are newer versions of the front calipers:

Part # Description Price (US$)
003-420-48-83 Left Front 6P Caliper 720.00
003-420-47-83 Right Front 6P Caliper 720.00

Could anyone explain why the 6 piston front calipers increased in price from 421.80 to 720.00? Did it become more lighter or something? I don't see why I should choose the more expensive calipers when the old ones will fit just fine?

Thanks.

This may sound like a silly question, but to upgrade my brakes to the AMG 6 piston, the dealer tells me all I need are the Calipers, Rotors, and Pads. Are there no other pieces I need such as bolts, etc.? Or do the small hardware items like bolts come with the Calipers?

I just want to make sure I have everything required to upgrade my brakes (since I will be having someone else do the upgrade as opposed to the dealer). Thanks!

I dunno about that parts u need, but the cheaper quote u got a year ago doesnt seem like a 6p to me, since its a C32 caliper..
Im sure there r more pro who can tell you more.

I beleive if you do the 6 piston front upgrade you also will need the 2 piece or floating rotor as well, it's alot lighter than the solid rotor. I was looking into this upgrade a while back.

6 Piston version AMG Calipers are found on new CLK 55's with front and Rear Silver Painted Calipers. They fit w203's.

Popularity probably.

THe silver/chrome grille for the W163 ML was £155 in UK, but went up to £265 when lots of people starting ordering them to retrofit to older models!!

Anybody with a C32 actually accomplish an upgrade from the 4 / 2 setup to the 6 / 4 setup (CLK 55/ SLK 55)?

I'm seriously considering this because it looks like it may be less expensive than going Brembo or other aftermarket.

From what I've been told, the brake upgrade will take away the functionality of the brake sensor (and it will just have to be visual maintenance).

Just so you all know, I've got a C230K SS.

Hmmm, I don't know if I want that then.

It seems pretty complicated, but hopefully if someone could identify all the part needed perhaps a proper mechanic could do this. I had gone to Meineke and asked them if they could do it and they said as long as I identify all the parts... Hmm... I thought they were the pros.

the SLK55 and CLK55 will fit without a problem.
if you can, try to get ones from the 030 performance package, because they are a bit larger.
the regular ones are good as well.

i had a chance on ebay to get all four corners (calipers, pads, rotors) for $1200, but i waited a day too long and someone else bought it...

From what I understand, that's with any upgrade you do, whether it's just AMG or if it's aftermarket.

i thought without the sensor in place, you get the brake warning?
maybe you zip-tie it out of place?

Not sure yet. Still trying to decide. At first I was thinking 8 piston AMG custom setup, but I don't want to drop the $$ for that and then find out I also have to have my rims re-set to fit the calipers, so that's why I've been looking into 6 piston F caliper w/ floating 2 piece rotors / 4 piston R setups.

And I've been looking at all the pros / cons that come with the upgrades. I've heard conflicting things about upgrading to AMG parts. Some people have said that they can keep the functionality of the sensor, others have said that there's no way to make it work.

I'm looking into custom "one-off" setups with other well-known brake companies (aside from Brembo and Stoptech) also.

Yup. Already looked at that thread, but I figured I'd post in the C32/C55 forums, since it's the same chassis (w/ exception to the front end of the c55).

if you want a nice and unique system, PShek has Brabus Brakes made by Alcon. But they are damn expensive...
Renntech also offers brakes, but at $5K for the fronts and $3K for the rears (it'd match your pulley pretty well )

Nah, I know. I think I know which route I'm gonna take, but just trying to make sure I evaluate all the options before deciding. Don't want to spend a grip of money feeling like I made a mistake later on.

can someone get the complete set of part numbers used and offered in the amg manufactur performance salon? Or do a cost and part number set for the clk63 front and rear v. slk55/clk55? - the one with the 14.2" larger setup.
