Pesky ESP

I now have had my C32 for 3 weeks & I am starting to learn how to drive it right. Seems my ESP OFF button does not really turn it off though. Any hint of tire spin & the "!" triangle flashes & the throttle is eased off - makes it hard to charge out of corners. Anyone have this figured out?

Yes, it's called feathering the throttle. That yields the quickest launches out of the turns.

I have not really tried to do a burn out. It will spin tired slightly for sure. I did a 0-60 with my G-tech & hazed the tires just a but from an idle launch (time was 5.4). When I power out of a corner, it seem to want to rocket & then the "!" flashes & the momentum is lost. I think this might even be dangerous on a race track if someone is following closely . . .

Potential slipage to the point when ESP cuts off everything is a non-issue at the track because speeds are too high. The car is simply not powerful enough to case this phenomenon. I have experienced what you are talking about, but only at low speed.

This is not to say that ESP will not engage on the track, but your goal is always to drive smoothly enough as to where it will not want to. Yes, it would be nice if ESP would shut off in full.

Video

Ok, I have temporarily posted AMGdood's video on my personal webspace until I can find a better place. The link may not work if the traffic bandwidth has been exceeded. I'm trying to find a more stable place as I write this...

nice burnout video AMGDood.

btw What high school do you attend to ? seems like something not an average kid would do when their parents pay for the car.

I did a quick check on the burn out - definitely will smoke the tires from a stand still (not nearly to the extent that Justin's training video show, though :-). My problem seems to be only in corners. I do understand the concept of smooth driving for fast lap times. I have lapped with NSXs, Vipers & Ferraris in my mostly stock Dodge Neon. If the tires are not squeeling, though, you are not going as fast as you otherwise could. Can get the tires to squeel on the C32 without the fun cops (ESP) busting up the joint. Has anyone tried removing an ABS sensor cable to see if that would shutdown ESP? Kind of extreme, but with std ABS, that usually works on other cars. Thanks -

There seems to be a way to completely shut off ESP from the steering wheel controls, but it takes ABS with it. The shutoff lasts until you turn off the car...I think maybe one of the Evosport guys knows how to do this. It was mentioned at c32life.com once. You can't get the tires to squeel without ESP coming on? Intresting. This is at what speed? Oh btw, the video is not mine, I just posted it for the owner.

Amarveet (AMGdood): Don't you think that is just slightly abusive? Very impressive I must admit, but I'd never do it. Your friends in the backround seemed to have gotten a kick out of it.

Jeff, try this:

How do I disable Traction Control completely?

To start, the key must be removed from the ignition.
Insert the key and turn to position 1.
Immediately press and hold the trip odometer reset button until the instrument cluster beeps. There is no visual message, only an audio beep. Be patient, this takes around 40 seconds.
Press the lower menu button (it looks like two sheets of paper, the one with the writing in the background behind the blank one)
Press the up arrow button.
Press the "+" sign to disable the Traction System (turn "ON" test mode)
Start the engine, the traction system is now disabled.
To return to normal, remove the key and restart the engine. The traction control warning should no longer be in the cluster. If it is, shut the engine off and remove the key again. Then insert the key and turn to position 1. Note that the DYNO test screen is displayed immediately. Push the "-" button to enable the traction system (turn "OFF" test mode)

Note : When you first turn the key to position 1, ESP DYNO Test screen pops up, then after 1-2 seconds it may disappear while faults are displayed. If you weren't fast enough in pressing the "-" button before codes were displayed, just wait until all codes cycle by, then the ESP DYNO Test screen will reappear.
It should work.

It's clear enough, the amount of smoke is clear! At what RPM did you let go of the brake pedal?

I've gotten a few e-mails from people wanting to know how to do a burnout. Do I dare tell them? Opinions on this matter? If you can't figure it out on your own, maybe you can't handle it? I'm babbling.

Justin -

Do you happen to know how to disable ESP completely on a 2003 SLK32 AMG? I tried following the instructions, but the SLK32 has no controls on the steering wheel.

Thanks,

Marc
