4 new cats under factory warranty!

My S.A. just told me that my 4 cats will be replaced under factory warranty. I brought my 03 C32 in because of some severe hesitation/rough idle...felt like it was going to stall. It limped to the dealer (I have an extended warranty), and they've had it for 3 days. They finally tell me it is because of clogged cats. Is this something you've heard about before? The car has 45500 miles. Thanks for fdbk.

Clogged cats? I have never heard of this before.. that seems strange.. how would they get clogged?

Same thing I thought. I have been having the coolant loss issue...about a quart every ten-14 days. I told them about this again (everytime I go there), but this is what they found.

Ah! Sounds like you have the leaky radiator. You should have them pull the top of the supercharger to see if there is green gunk in the inlets.. Do you have powerloss... does it feel like your SC is working?

It was running fine until the symptoms I mentioned started. No noticable power loss at all. I've been telling them about the coolant loss for over a year now...since I've owned it. I have asked to have the s/c checked (although I haven't specifically asked this time), but they haven't been willing to go that far yet. Anyway, I was told Monday I should have it back and I will see how it goes from there.

Have you done a glycol test on the tranny? They should do it for free.. I had to pay though.. This will tell immediately if you have a leaky radiator.

Hello,

IF your cats are failed like you say and you likely have failed O2 sensors as well, AND your car keeps eating coolant there is a good chance you have a leaking intercooler. The intercooler could be dumping coolant into the combustion chamber and then it ends up being send out the exhaust to the cat's. Coolant is known to foul both the cats and the 02 sensors so I bet you have something causing the cats to fail. Force them to take the intake manifolds off and look for a crusty substance caked on the walls of the intake runners. If it is leaking the car will have dried coolant all over the place and it likely has clogged up the intake runners to the point where air flow is reduced. This is a more common issue than some think and the fact that your cats have died is a bad sign for the intercooler.

Good luck

Thanks, CynCarvin32 and AMGMark. I will print this topic post and bring to the dealer on Monday morning. Hopefully they will consider your advice. Any advice on how I should "force them" to do a glycol test and/or check under the intake manifolds? Thanks.

The feds require the emissions system warranty to be substantially longer than the bumper to bumper. IIRC, its 8 years or 80k miles. Make sure that you don't have them trying to charge you any deductible.

Right on, Viper501. That is exactly what they told me...8/80. This repair will be no charge. I am now more concerned with the underlying cause, however... I think we're treating a symptom here.
