Delimited C32! well at least I think so

OK well the other day I went head to head with a Ferrari 360 Modena. Amazingly the C32 held itself with the Ferrari - he couldnt leave me - and I couldnt leave him - we got to about 166mph and then I slowed down shocked - why? - because I thought the C32 was limited to 155mph?

SO - I contact AMG in Germany to ask for clarification and maybe a certificate if the car has been delimited by them. I know for instance that a friend CLK55 AMG w208 model had been delimited and specs by them to F1 spec and he'd got a certificate to proof it.

Whats weird is that the guy I spoke to - a Guido Brormann said that they dont do delimiting for older AMG's - they only started a year ago and its an option specified when ordering a new AMG. I mentioned that my friend has his CLK delimited and he said '.. you are right, we actually delimited vehicles in the past, but this has been an somehow "unofficial" process which we stopped, when we worked official ways. '

Anyway - he now says there is NO WAY to get my C32 delimited. I asked him how I could check if mine has been anyway, he said to check to see if there is an AMG sticker in the fuel cap specifying recommended tyres. Mine hasnt. Yet I was still able to get over 155mph - to this he said that most AMG's will go somewhere over 155mph.

So - to some degree im not really too sure if mine is delimited and sadly according to him AMG will not delimit older cars now. Do you guys know another way to get a car delimited? or at least checked to see if it is?

yeah the delimiting / max speed has to do with the oem tires...can't sell a 170 mph car with 149mph tires....that's why the tech was asking you to check for the recommended tires.

i've bumped up against the limiter a few times- at an indicated 160.

well....you can keep your foot in it to see if you can go 170! also most if not all aftermarket chips have the govenor removed.

If you bought the car used, maybe the old owner(s) chipped the ECU and took out the limiter.

I have a renntech flash and supposely the 155 limiter is gone but I haven't tried it yet.

Also, sunman was showing me the other day how you can change the limiter setting from 250 km/h (155 mph) to around 275 km/h (170 pmh)... all through the star diagnosis system.

I've also read road tests when cars mysteriously exceeded the stated speed limiter. I think the German makers have a handshake deal on speed limiters to keep the insurers and authorities happy; but they may disregard the agreement with impunity.

I've been curious as to whether my car is limited, but even on a track like VIR, with big, long straights, I top out at about 135 before I need to brake for the next turn. I have no intention of trying to find a higher speed on public roads, so I guess the limiter really does not matter to me!

That shouldn't matter. The MPH that shows on the speedo is the same one that the ECU sees

we have a great private track which is about 7 miles long - straight - in fact its rather like the one on top gear - that disused airport runway - its great to just floor it up there - thats where I go - id never been head to head with another car though so never have given it all but with the 360 modena we just went with it - and I was shocked. One thing that kept going over in my head though - suppose my tires give up and burst - im dead - that made me drop out and slow down

Thats the best way to get a real buzz and see what the car is all about - you obviously cant do that on public roads and the nearest track to me - Brands has too many turns to get that kind of speed up.

Your lucky! I have had my C32 up to 155-156 a few times and then it starts surging but wont go any faster. Car felt more stable than my vert vette which has been 187 mph and very scary in a soft top.

Some day I will get the limiter removed just to see how fast it will go!
