POLL: suspension lowering springs.. which to purchase (HELP)?

i have been looking into suspension options for a while and have narrowed it down to springs. i doont want to change a whole lot on the car for warranty reasons.

i wanted to get a little drop on my w209 clk55 amg without needing to change all the components of the suspension. I think the springs for the w203 and w209 are very similar. thats why im posting here as well. from my understanding, lorinser, brabus, renntech, kleemann, and carlsson springs lower the car without changing the shocks or sway bars.

Which one do you guys recommend?

I have the H&R cup kit (springs and shocks) and it has a very comfortable ride and still way stiffer and lower than stock. If I ever have to change my suspension again I will get the Carlsson or Bilstein PSS9 coilovers w/ adjustable height and dampening.

Renntech for a quick drop and no harsh ride.

performance wise, I would do H&R.

I have Renntechs.

It gives you more of a stock lowering look (more evenly).

H&Rs lower the rear too much for my taste.

If you come down to those two, keep in mind that H&Rs are half the price of the Renntechs.

Nope. I'm using OEM shocks with H&R springs. Very happy. Firmer ride, but very civilized.

As to the shims, Benz offers a series of shims (basically spring perches) for the rear of our car that allow you to make permanent adjustment to final ride height. The tallest shim is called #4, and with H&R springs, the car will look best with the #4 shim. It's a $20 part.

PS: I clicked "Renntech" on the survey just so I could see the results. As noted, I'm fine with the H&R Sport Springs.

by chance do any of you know if changing the springs will ruin the warranty on the other parts of the suspension and also will mercedes dealers do the installation?

It's not clear. I would NOT use a dealer to do the installation, unless you had no viable alternatives.

Some aftermarket springs are OEM color, and a dealer tech might not even notice that they were changed. But if they did notice, and you brought the car in for a problem in the suspension, it's conceivable that they could deny coverage. It's a tough argument for them to make, though, that lower/firmer springs would contribute to a component failure. It depends on dealerships; some of them seems militant about this issue. Overall, I think it is a relatively low risk.

I had the RENNtech springs by far the best match for the stock shocks. If you go with H&R race get the Koni yellow as well.

the RENNtech springs is black and has absolutely no marking at all which is also perfect if you are worry about warranty issue. it does cost the most however.

I used to have H&R spring w/ stock shocks . . . switched over to Renntech spring w/ stock shocks. I would have saved a ton of money if I just bought the Renntechs from the beginning. I was trying to save a few bucks with the H&Rs. The H&Rs are not bad, but they lower too much in the rear and the spring rate is more harsh than stock. You really notice that the rear is too low with 19" wheels. It isn't too noticeable with 17".

Hello internet suspension buddy!

Got the same setup and I LOVE IT.

Anyone know of a professional photographer down here in Miami?

Are these coilovers adjustable? Do they replace the standard springs or do they work in concert with them? Not very familiar with this, but very interested.

Coilovers replace the OEM spring and shock unit. All coilovers are adjustable for ride height (using wrenches). Other adjustments (to shock valving) are available on the higher-end stuff.

Thanks Fifth for the response. So you're saying that the stock spring is completely removed from the suspension? Any modification or fabrication necessary underneath as is sometimes the case when moving from coils to air? I gotta do some research on this. I'm still having some problem with un-even ride height in the rear and this just might be my answer. What's the $$ range of a respectable set of these things.

stock springs and shocks are removed, then Coilovers will bolt right in.

make sure you remove the spring pad in the rear, unless you get PSS9's or Carlsson Coilovers

I assumed you needed something back there. Can you say why the pad needs to be removed with the HR COs?
