Dyno Mode!!!

Amazing........Good deal. You are confirming all that I know about running on the track on Dyno Mode since 2002 teaching racing using this incredable car that the house of AMG bulit! Dyno Mode is the only way to fly. You will be faster in every situation rain included......................LOL. There is nothing like driving a car that can run like my race cars from 1966 and on in the SCCA with no computer controls to get in the way of good drivers!

Yep, agree only way to fly, now, some folks would have to get used to the no anti-lock brakes, but its all about learning brake tolerances and knowing when to actually use the brake vs just letting off and making the turn.

I have been going to track events, both Solo I, Solo II, open wheel racing using a 1982 Formula Ford and a range of driving schools. Granted the M3 on most of these road courses is the car to use, but there's something to be said about tossin the C32 around putting down most of the time better numbers or equal to the other cars in the class.

For a year i did autocross in FS STOCK with street tires. Now my competition was the follow:

2003 Z28 with Hoosier slicks
2002 SS Camero with Slicks
2000 M5 with street tires
1996 WS6 Ramair with slicks
2005 Mustang GT

Consistently I was only a second behind and/or beat them on the track with STREET TIRES. It got so bad on some events; i was over a second faster.

So last year, other folks that were using the C32 at autocross (some of you on here may know this already), they moved our cars classes...now one would think? ok CS? BS? no... FRIGGIN AS STOCK.

That puts the C32 against the M-Roaster, S2000 ... etc

On an autocross course a S2000 is going to roast a C32 all day long. Dont know who was driving a C32 kicking the absolute **** out of everyone, but they did a good job to get the car moved to AS!!!

The Pulley/ECU helped immensely, dyno mode accented it nicely.

Question:

So your car stock ran out of power on a hot day, but with a pulley/ecu it didn't? Pullies give the car MORE heat saok. Please explain this a little.

See yeah

PS: Do you have the Qualifi dif or stock open unit my friend?

First the later, the car when I purchased it already had a LSD installed from the previous owner. Prob could tell from the autocross video's.

As for the pulley/ecu; there was a noticeable increase in power through all aspects, takeoff, powering through turns, over multiple runs. What would happen the first few autocrosses i ran fully stock, after the 3rd run (out of 5) the car would react noticeably different when coming out of the turns under full power. There was a noticeable lack of, compared to the first few runs. Not to the point of a IC failure (that was like having no supercharger at all); but just the feel of the car taking maneuvering through the course.

After the Pulley/ECU no matter if it was the first or last heat I felt significant power difference throughout the course, the only exception to this was the few times I took it on an actual road course or the winged warrior event in Indianapolis, where we went from 1/4 drags, straight to autocross, straight to skidpad, by the time it was ready for the 0-100mph-0 test, the car felt sluggish.

But ultimately the increase bonus of HP/TQ compensated for the heat soak for autocross runs.

Thanks alumar:

I was just curious, because I tried the dyno mode on my STOCK 04 in a few open track events, open diff, and all I received was MASSIVE one wheel tire spin comin g out of EVERY right hand corner. I TRUELY believe with a good diff, the car WOULD be faster in DYNO mode, but stock, I don't think so. As far as the heat soak, I just did pullies and HE upgrade and will return to the track in the spring to see. Anyway, GREAT RUNS, and thanks again for the response. GOOD LUCK my friend in ALL your racing

See yeah

Hey there AWDman:

Yeah, I get to try mine this Saturday at Beaverun. CAN'T WAIT

I too have Brandons HE which really looked good to me. Other than the windsheild squitter lines, striaght forward easy install. Le's just see if the new pulley helps, or hurts me, he, he.

Update on DYNO mode for track use

Okay, so now I have a pulley and a larger HE, and went back to the track. With ESP off, power slides, coming around 10 and 11 were the norm. Not that this was the fastest way around the track, but just had the DREADED one wheel spin. Made three laps in DYNO mode just for the heck of it. Results: DO NOT TRY THIS YOURSELF, WITHOUT A LSD. I can not stress this enough, as the car was truely undriveable, atleast at the limits. One wheel spin coming out of EVERY right handed. Locked up the drivers front coming into 10. I would be more than happy to take ANY bets, from ANYONE on this fourm, that their times would INDEED be SLOWER in Dyno mode if they do not have a LSD, PERIOD! And the oposite MIGHT be true if you have the ALL mighty Quaifi, but I would need to see it to beleive it.

Went back out, with Dyno mode off, for the next two sessions, and had a ton of fun. Yes I would ALWAYS recomend turning the ESP off, for anyone with a little experiance. But as I have said before, " Leave DYNO mode for just that DYNO time" It does not work AT ALL with the stock open diff on a road race course.

New pulley and Code3 HE worked Fantastic. NEVER any issues with loss of power for the full 20 minute session. Including passing many P cars, and my favorite M3's. Brakes did take a good work out with my higher entry speeds courtesoy of the Pulley

See yeah

Just wondering if this is year specific or if all of the AMG models have Dyno mode?

There are specific instructions for different years. Since your profile says you have a 2002, your would full under the first set of instructions listed in this thread. Please read the thread carefully though. Dyno mode can be dangerous.

I would have to agree with above statement regarding dyno mode and an open diff'd C32. I've been driving in "dyno mode" for a few years now and single rear wheel tirespins are the norm when the tires cannot get traction because of wet roads, etc. Until recently, I just tried out my car with the Phantom Grip LSD conversion and it has proven to make a vast difference in handling. No more single wheel tirespin; not peg-legged anymore. I took Glendora Mountain Roadway at speed and noticed no tendency for the rear end to fishtail out, even when the tires were screeching. I had about 50% tread left on the rear Michellin PS2s when I started. Now, they're down to about 30%. I have asked others with Quaife in the C32 and SRT8s and they all confirm that ESP interferes much less frequently with the LSD. ESP never comes on in my car, so the motor never bogs down. These AMGs should have came standard with an LSD.

After doing an oil change on my car yesterday, I was reminded why dyno mode is really useful on our W203's.

The ability to pull up an actual, accurate oil level number makes me happy.

I remember doing this in my C 230. My boys and I lovingly call this 'Arcade Mode'.

So just to make sure I understand this correctly - turning off ESP only (not dyno mode) allows your rear drive wheels to spin, yet if there is excessive spinning left to right, it will cut engine power or brake the faster spinning wheel?

Yep, even with "ESP off" there are still electronic nannies. In dyno mode its you and the road
