Hey m5q8. First of all, welcome to the forum. I hope you are able to find answers to all your questions within this arena.

That being said, you really need to do a search of the forum before starting a new thread, asking a question that is covered in depth in the owner's manual. Your answser lies in your type of driving and your conditions. Most likely, you will be in S most of the time. It's about the most basic question you could have asked.

I am not trying to be a jerk, but you will catch a boat load of crap from the members here if you don't search first.

Over the last 6 years of the C32's life, I think that almost every question, problem and quirk has been discussed in depth here. Happy hunting. You'll be impressed with what you will learn here.

Welcome to the forum m5q8. I'm new as well, and here's some of the practicle stuff I've gathered relating to your question. You know,... the kinda stuff that really helps in understand what the deal is. W= winter or wet, and S= Standard or Sport is how most interpret these two letters. Here's what's really important to understand,... setting your selector to W forces the C32 to start off in 2nd gear. Not necessarily the best for wet or slippery weather some say. Higher gearing actually encourages wheel spin, especially when trying to get things moving in slippery conditions. However, it is said that start off in 2nd promotes better fuel economy and reduces wear-n-tear on the tranny. Our 3.2L can get things moving with little strain and without the assistance of the blower in most cases. IMO, replacing the W with an E (for Economy) would make more sense. When in S, the tranny takes you through all five geas,... 1 thru 5 1st gear is great for launching, and getting things moving with an attitude!

I've been told that W is best for calm city driving in thick traffic, and serve well for most calm and easy driving. The S setting is best when you want to get things moving quickly, or if a dis-respectful M3 pulls up beside you. I've also been told that there are separate adaptive program memories for both, so your driving habits in W DO NOT affect the tranny's learning of your driving habits in S. If true, that's very good becasue we have to capability to teach the car two curves. Sorta like the seat memories for different people,... W for sane geriactric (sp) driving and S for crazy stupid DTM driving.

Hope this helps! I mean real help,... not help that sounds like scolding!

on my button.. I have W or S.

But on my screen I have C or S.

I had a new TCU and Torque converted installed due to the "jerky shifting". I believe my transmission was replaced too, but I'm not sure. This was done all during my warranty period.

Either way.. C mode is like W mode. Starts in 2nd gear

S= Summer or Sport mode.

i agree with everything above except for the false statement of higher gearing related to slipping. use w for rain and snow (snow yeah right) and use s for everything else. w will save you a little more gas but not much. s will shift/downshift more aggressivly.

Great extensive explanation of a feature covered on page 135 of our owner's manual. It took me precisely 27 seconds to find this reference in my manual.

If it sounds like scolding, it's because we already have nearly 8200 threads in the C32/C55 forum alone. Many are basic and repetative. If we don't teach people to search (by the way, I found 541 related links when I did a sample search on this topic, using the C32/C55 forum exclusively), we will need to trudge through tens of thousands of useless repeat threads, slowing the servers to a crawl.

Now, let's hope future newbies search enough to find your thorough description of the W and S modes. It really does a good job and should not have to be answered again at a later date.
