2002 C32 Transmission Problems

Since many ppl seem to have this 1500-2000 rpm jerky problem, I want to see if it is true that all 2002 C32 owners are having the problem.

Simply the problem is: When you accelerate softly from 1st gear to 2nd gear, the car jerks at around 1500-2000.

If you want to take a poll of this problem lets make sure we descibe it correctly. I do not believe that ANY or Many people are having a problem with the 1st to 2nd gear change. The problem does occur around 1500rpm, but it is not related to a gear change. It occurs when the Torque Converter locks up and then the car bogs slightly then leaps forward causing the jerk.

Note: this occurs if you start out in 2nd gear(W mode) or put the car into 1st so that it will not shift until redline. The jerk is still there and no gear change.

To answer question, yes my car has this problem.

Yes, I have this problem, but I cannot replicate it on command. It happens every now and then.

Hi all,

My family just leased a C32 yesterday. I am experiencing the same "jerking thing" when the car slowly accelerates. At first, I thought that's how the AMG is until I read this thread....Is this normal for all C32 or is this something that I should be more concerned about?

I guess I have the "problem", but it does not really bother me much. I believe it is the torque converter, as Zeppelin suggests.

I think it is one of those "price you pay for performance" things that go along with the lock-up-in-every-gear AMG transmission.

See. It's only the 2002's that are having this problem. I am taking this poll because I want to see if all 2002 are having this problem, if so, maybe we should all write a letter to Mercedes and tell them that they should send out some kind of tech note, so that our cars to get fixed. There is a possible fix to this problem, but mercedes doesn't want to spend the money, and when I brought my car into the dealership, they didn't want to fix it either even though the problem is there.

I believe if you want to fix the problem, the dealership has to change the transmission module, and I don't understand why, the dealership/mercedes isn''t willing to change it. And my understanding, this problem is very bad for your transmission, it's like shifting gears badly when you drive a manual car, and sooner or later you'll screw up your whole transmission (most likely it'll be after 48 months) so that you have to pay for a brand new transmission, and you have to pay the module yourself.....

The jerk is not a shift, but lockup of the torque convertor...

My problem is that the jerk doesn't happen everytime. When I took the car in, it behaved normally so it's difficult to prove to the technican when they could not feel the jerk.

Are there specific steps to follow so it will happen for sure? :p

1. W mode,
2. speedshift to 1st,
anything else?

I think what mercedes/AMG should do is admit there is a problem, and let the dealership techs know about it instead of all of us wasting time bringing it in and showing them the problem!! -> Since this doesn't happen to 2003's, so they must have fixed it for the 2003's, so that means they know about it.

i used to have this prob with my 2002. Try this solution im sure it will help not only with the tranny but also with the overall performance of the car. Once you feel that your new c32 has been broken in (around 10000miles after first oil change) reset the ECU. You can do this simply by disconnecting you battery for about half and hour to an hour. It take about that long to get rid of all the info you c32 has learned so far. once you reconnect the battery then it will start to adjust and learn without any buggs.

dont be allarmed if:
your traction control light stays on for a few miles, it will go away after that and also, your one touch window switched have to be reset. to do this pull the window down all the way then pull it up and hold the switch for a couple of seconds untill you hear a light clicking sound this means its set. do this with all the windows and the sunroof too.

by the way my car is for sale if anyone is interrested

I took delivery of my 2002 C32 AMG in March 2002. I have never (knock on wood) felt the TRQ locking problem.

I mentioned it to the dealer and they took the car out w/the computer and measured whatever they needed to measure and told me the car was fine.

That said they replaced my "control unit", part number 203-565-16-01 to solve my air pump problem. Replacing the control unit seems to have improved the shifting. Though I think they unplugged the battery b/c the car acted funny until I put on some miles and my seat and mirror settings seem funny, I think they need to be reset. If this control module is the transmission control module I still do not have the problem (knock on wood) and the car shifts much better.

HTH.

I've had it on rare occasion (2002, 54,000 miles) but can't say that I notice it or really mind. Drive an Audi tiptronic and you'll appreciate the Benz transmission.

I thought I saw a topic regarding the fact that flashing the 2002 ECU with the 2003 info got rid of this?

Nope, not on mine at least. Everything the dealership did to mine was futile. The last 4 times I took it in, they told me that was normal for a high performance car like mine.

The jerk has been pretty bad lately. I end up resetting the ECU to lessen the effects for a few days.

Is that the resetting of the transmission memory thing where you hold down the pedal while the key is in accessory mode

Change your ATF fluid, although you'll be able to drain out 4.5 quarts the
jerk hasn't come back. I've tried to simulate it but I just can't get it to come
back.

Yes, I just did mine this morning. It resets the ECU adaptions, what the system learns from your driving style. It returns it to original parameters.

I think I'll give it a try at the local independent after the holidays (need to replenish the bank account first).
