C55 Rear Tire Question

AMG Friends --

I have a 2005 C55 with 14K miles on it and the dealer is saying the stock rear tires are worn down and need to be replaced.

Tha factory tires are the P Zero rosso 225 40 ZR 18.

Dont know if I love the Pirellis -- what else would you guys suggest before I lock in and buy new rear tires??

Thanks much

You could pick up a slightly used rear set until your fronts wear out, then replace all 4 with another brand (ie Michelin)

Ah just a thought here, but there are MANY tire threads already here, USE SEARCH please. Also look down a few posts as there JUST WAS A NEW THREAD.

Okay, now for reality. Look GS-D3 for longevity+fun, and Bridgesatone 050 PP's for MORE FUN - longevity

See yeah

Hm mine are at 7xxx miles and the dealer wants to replace them, saying they are "dangerously low" on tread.

My dealer also informed me of that, why, because dealers are DANGEROUSLY HIGH in prices for tires. Call tire rack, or find a local tire shop that will work with you, trust me they are out there. My NTB and Sears match tire racks prices for me.

See yeah

well, you should know if you need new tires or not, just check the wear indicators, and how do they perform in the wet? Pirelli's also tend to crack between the treads and if you got 14k, I would think that's about normal for rears. If NTB and Sears match tirerack prices, you'll save on shipping then too, but then there's taxes unless you live in DE. Besides, you should be getting a check from Pres. Bush soon, so go with a set of Michelins - your car deserves the best.

Hate to disagree with you my friend, but friends don't let friends buy Michelins. WAY too expensive for what they give you in return.

well, I prefer to hear my engine when I drive rather than the tires. I'm also curious about the Advans, but the guy with the M3 like the Pilots better.

Okay, Okay, the NEW p2's are better than the originals, but they are still WAY over priced for what they give you. Bridgestone 050 PP, which I have on now, Are a tremendously grippy tire as I said, but at a price 140 treadwear for SCCA rules. Anyway, back to the subject, talk with tire rack, racers, or even street guys and they will ALL steer you away from the michilins. Just plain too expensive and they don't live up to their reputation. I too am intersted in the Advans, but the model I like says NO sub 32 temps No good for PA. GS-D3's do get noisy at the end of their tread life, but they are $80 cheaper then the PS2's. Did I mention they CRUSH the PS2's on the track, or in the rain.
To each his own, but I still and always will say "Friends don't let friends buy Michelins" PERIOD

See yeah

PS: I had them on my 2001 M and 2002 M3, and my 2000 mustang with YOK's CRUSHED them around the twisties, FYI

I'm looking at both the RE01r and the RE050 PP -- I live in NYC where there alot of potholes etc

will either of these just crumble on the junk roads that are NYC are will they hold up until I get on the open road where I can have some fun?

I live in DT SD and they seem to hold up just fine. I cannot comment on NYC however the roads down here are pretty beat up. Once out of dt they're smooth and fine but definitely a much stiffer sidewall therefore they transmit more of the road imperfections.
