0w-40 mobile 1 european formula. There hasnt been any real proof that the other brand of oils are better then the one mercedes recommends. So for now i'll stick with stock to maintain reliability.

I use the Mobil 1 0W-40 Euro formula, I've always liked Mobil 1 anyway so it worked out perfect! I've only done 2 oil changes so far, both have been around 2500 miles. I drive my car "aggressively" so I'm not going to take any chances with something as cheap as oil. When it starts coming out "cleaner" looking I'll start going a little longer, but I'll never go more than 5k miles.

I have a lot of experience with different oils used for high hp cars...mainly turbo charged over 500hp. I have noticed that the Royal Purple is the best oil. It holds its viscosity well and showed the least amount of damage on rod bearings. Valvoline was the worst out of any of the oils. In order of oil recommendations from my experience based on rod bearing wear on high hp cars is.
1 - Royal Purple
2 - Castrol Syntec
3 - Mobile 1
4 - Valvoline
What oil to run can get very technical. I am not sure of the tolerances in this engine....maybe someone could tell me but that affects what oil you should run. All of these oils vary in viscotity even if they are labeled the same 0w-40. Another thing to think about is oil pressure versus oil circulation. Thinner oil will circulate more however a thicker oil will have higher pressure. We used to run wider tolerances on the rod bearings on our cars but run a thicker oil. I am guessing that based on the recommened 0-40, this engine has very tight tolerances.
In all honestly we have blown up many engines, Supras, 300zx's, all of the 90s high Hp cars. By far the best result were with the Royal purple. Castrol Syntec was not far behind.

None of these were Mercs, but all had high miles and none had any oiling related problems. All of them never used more oil towards the end and looked brand new inside towards the end too.

Now that all the oil threads are merged, I have 93k miles and always run Mobile 1 OW40 and change the oil and filter every 5k to 7.5k miles. So far no oil related troubles at all. I do not track the car but push it rather aggressively when conditions permit at least once or twice a week. I'm hoping to keep my car running to 240k miles -- I'd love to have a high mileage (with badge) high performance merc.

My experience with Castrol Syntec is 180 degrees from yours. My experience with it was horrible and personally would not run it in anything I owned.

I want to try a different oil weight. I live in san diego, ca. I have been running mobile 1 0w40 and no problems, so why change right? I've been reading this thread and i see a few different weights. Im not trying to cheap out, but if i can how lenient can i go on a weight change?
