Getting ready for winter

Hi all. Unfortunate enough, the winter here in Northeast is going to be extemely cold this year. (Man, I just wish I live in Cali.) I just put down $1000+ for a set of Bridgestone tires. I wonder if it's worth the effort and money? For those of you who also drive in snow, what do you do to prepare for it? Any techniques in snow driving? (I have bad experiences w/ rearwheel in snow w/ my boxster.) What about skin care for the car?

Hi DFC,

Winter tires are well worth it and you will not regret having them. Just remember to drive much slower than normal on ice and snow and plan ahead and avoid abrupt manoeuvres.

You will have to play with the ESP setting, turning it on or off depending on the situation. For instance, when getting out a driveway or parking lot you may want to turn esp off so as not to have the engine cut while your trying to merge into traffic. Once rolling you may want to turn ESP back on so as to keep the car straight. Depending on how slippery it is you may have to toggle the ESP to adjust to the road conditions.

As for car care, protect the paint with a good wax and wash as often as is possible to avoid damage from the road salts if they use road salts in your area. If possible also wash the underneath of the car.

Good Luck!

Thanks Franco, your tips helped a great deal... especially the ESP On/Off part. It gets pretty annoying when I needed power but nothing comes up when I accelerate.

Damn damn damn...
Past weekend was nice and clear, but still cold as hell. I washed my car hoping to rid the road salt and mud. I discovered some big *** scratches on my hood, and roof pan. Something like 5" long. They look horizontal to my window, which makes no sense to me if those were stone chips. It's probably someone keyed my ***. Even my pewter colored car shows the scratches clearly visible. Crap, only 3k, and already scared for life. "

Hi all,

weather in munich/germany right now: -6° Celsius and shiny weather.

For winter use:
Good winter tires [like my GoodYear Eagle Ultra Grip GW-3] and smooth on the gas

snow tires

I got to test my four new Dunlops snow tires (M2's) last week in the Boston area. Quite pleased so far. Good grip, not too much noise, and decent dry performance. Stopping on snow covered roads was better than expected; but even with the W trnany mode, a light foot is warranted on the accelerator - or the 349 horsepower and ASR battle it out.

I strongly recommend snow tires for anyone in snow country. I tried to get by once in a BMW ieth "all season" radials - big mistake. Maybe ok for front drivers, not so for rear wheel drive preformance cars.

Ian - I looked for any C32 in Munich last month - didn't see any- must have missed yours! I longed for my C32 on the Autobahn!!!

Hey Chuck

you were in munich? Why that? I am working in munich and living in augsburg (50 km from munich). I travell every day to munich by train. BTW does any1 know the Computer Sciences Corporation [CSC]? Thats an US company which I´m work at.

Winter tires: If you drive 225x45 17" you should buy the GoodYear Eagle Ultra Grip GW-3 or the Nokian WR 225/45 R 17 H. These are the best allround tires for winter sports
The Pirelli SnowSport W210 is very good too, but only if you are deep in the snow
This tire has probs with aquaplaning and the grip isn´t that good on wet conditions.
