Raplacing the intercooler
Hi.
I'm currently working on my car, got it back from the dealer today and they scrued it up pretty nice. I came there with a check engine light more than a week ago, today got it back as a broken car. The supercharger doesn't work, tranny doesn't shift (have to manualy shift using speedshift), car shakes and dies if you stop. Dealer blames it on my intercooler, I pray they are correct. Just waiting to recieve Eric's intercooler which should be here any day now.
Well anyway I barely got the car home today, started working on it. I unplugged the battery, took the intake manifolds off and the intake. Right now I'm at the supercharger, I need to take off the belt, and this is where I need your help!
I did some research and couldn't find any DIY for intercooler replacement on our cars. I don't have much experience working on cars, I can say I'm enjoying working on it myself.
Any suggestions or DIY's are welcome!
Thanks!

damn that sucks....sorry to hear about the intercooler. Judging off the diagram from code3's intercooler thread. The hardest part is just getting the supercharger off, i would give brandon a PM.

If you’re somewhat comfortable under the hood and have the proper tools at hand, it’s not overly involved:
I don’t have pictures to share from my DIY. You’re welcome to PM for details, as MB’s published procedure is copyrighted.

Hi again, thanks for the input!
I left the intake manifolds in the tub overnight with half a bottle of dishwashing stuff. I tried cleaning them with what I use for getting grease off the stove but it's a spray not a liquid like the dish washing thing. I hope it takes all that crap out of my intake manifolds. I have my fingers crossed I'm not going to see this residue in the heads or anywhere else. Does anyone with who experienced a leaking IC know where else the residue forms?
And what is the best product to get it off with?
My bathroom looks like a cow just took a $h1t in it lol, I hope nobody asks to use the bathroom anytime soon or they will have a heartattack

If so, I would use carb/choke cleaner - spray it in and you will remove the residue pretty easily. Make sure you empty the soiled contents and allow to dry in such a way that it can drain out.
As for cleaning residue out from the intake runners - I'm not sure what the best method is short of removing the heads. It goes without saying that you do NOT want any caked residue falling down further into the intakes.

Hi everybody.
If you missed the first post here is a short version of it:
I had a check engine light on, car ran well, gears shifted flawlessly, supercharger worked. Took it to the dealer, when I got it back the tranny wouldn't automaticly shift, sc didn't engage (wouldn't go past 2800 rpm) and the car died if I brought it to a stop.
Me and my friends got the intercooler back on today, I replaced it with a slightly used one. Car still shakes and dies, I will videotape it tommorow.
Here is a direct quote from my service report I got from MB dealership reffering to the intercooler:
"F CHECK FOR COOLANT LEAK FROM INTERCOOLER. SEE **** FIRST.
CAUSE: INTERCOOLER LEAKING
2001 PERFORM SYSTEM PRESSURE TEST--INSPECT FOR
LEAKS--ESTIMATE PROVIDED--CUSTOMER DECLINED
3019 C 0.00
86555 INTERCOOLER LEAKING 1.00 PRESSURE TESTED COOLANT SYSTEM OVERNIGHT. PRESSURIZED SYSTEM TO 20PSI. AFTER 13 HOURS PRESSURE STILL AT 10 PSI ON COOLANT SYSTEM. LIFTED FRONT OF VEHICLE WITH FLOOR JACK. INSPECTED AND FOUND ENGINE COOLANT ON PUTTLED IN THE BOTTOM, BACK SECTION OF INTERCOOLER. GAVE ESTIMATE, CUSTOMER DECLINED.
It's hard to make full sense out of the way they write these reports but from what I am understanding they make it sound like I declined the pressure test? Just FYI: this is the second time them checking my cooling system for leaks since they missed it the first time after I specificly told my advisor to check the intercooler and they replaced my reservoir instead, blaming the leak on it. So second time I told them to do a check for free. I guess they wrote it off that I "rejected" it so who ever checks their job doesn't see that they are doing it again for free, therefore doesn't see they didn't get the job done the first time.
These are premature assumptions, I have no clue how the dealership works.
I'm assuming by leaving it at 20psi for 13 hours they scrued it up
Do I have a right to go complain about it? I already did and a service advisor told me they are not responsible for the way the car is running and if I change the IC myself, they will not guarantee the problem will be solved. I do not want to go far and say they are ripping me off, but I'm pretty sure that's what they're doing, because after the intercooler it will be something else they "didn't cause". They know I have aftermarket mods and I know they will use that against me if I complain further.
Anyway video tommorow.

When I did mine I managed to get all the manifold bolts out without removing the fuel rail.
From what you are describing, it sounds to me like there may be damage to either the intake air temp sensor, or the MAP sensor. The IAT sensor is screwed into the elbow that mounts to the back of the intercooler, the MAP sensor is the one that is held to the intercooler with 2 bolts. B17/8 & B28/8 in the pics.
Check they are not unplugged too!!
