Heat exchanger replacement

Hi All,
I currently have my 03 C32 at the stealership and they are telling me to replace the heat exchanger will require approximately 6 hours of labor. I have an extended warranty and they are only willing to pay for 2 hours of labor, stating that is what all the manuals say is the standard for this car.

Does anyone have any experience with this, or know what a true "typical" labor time should be? I want to have the proper information to take to either the warranty company or the stealership to dispute whoever is off base here.

Thanks!

An independent shop can do it in about 2 hours. I pidi 100 bux.
For 6 hours it should include dinner and ballroom dancing session with Kim Kardashian.

With a helper, it should only take a couple hours. Trying to do it yourself would be a major PITA because of the bumper removal and reinstallation.

Thanks all. I'll have to be sure to question about why it takes them so much longer than apparently everyone else can do it.

upgrade!

If you are going to replace the Heat Exchanger, go with the LET Heat Exchanger and Johnson Pump. (might as well upgrade)

I think 6 hours is a little too long. It should take 2-3 I believe.

Why are they telling you to replace it? Is it leaking? Is there a puddle in front of your car.

Hmmm... I read it that the OP requested a labor quote to replace the HE (presumably, with a larger aftermarket unit) and the dealer quoted 6 hours of labor... maybe KYC32 can clarify

The C class bumper is actually very easy to remove compared to other cars. I can take it off in under 20 minutes now. Reinstallation is probably just a bit longer. The heat exchanger should pop out in about 5 minutes once the bumper is off. It looks like a much longer job than it actually is; they've probably never done it before. Two hours is much more realistic.

Just installed a Code 3 Performance HE today.
2 to 3 hrs is fair for an experienced tech.

Very true, c32used - when I changed mine, I'm approximating anyway, b/c of changing the HE and the Johnson pump at the same time. Plus, had never attempted to R&R the bumper before. Plus, needed to run out to the hardware store for some hardware, SS hose clamps, etc. etc.
