C55 Questions

Hey, new to the board... just bought a used 2005 C55 AMG, and had a few questions.

First of all, does anyone have any problems with the outside temperature display/thermometer? Mine is accurate for the majority of the time, but there have been a few occasions where I have looked down and its read upwards of 110 degrees, when the outside temp was closer to 65-70. Also the check gas cap light has come on twice, and gone off when I turned the car off and on again. Could these problems have to do with a bad battery, because when I first got the car it needed to be jumped, but I've had no problems starting or running the car since then, and I actually have a new battery, which I'm going to put in this weekend.

Secondly, when my foot is completely off the gas and not on the brake, sometimes the car feels like it is engine braking. I get the same feeling like I am going down a hill in a low gear in a manual transmission car and the car keeps down shifting until I roll to a stop. Basically the car doesn't seem to want to coast along, it wants to stop. Is this normal or is there something wrong with the tranny?

Finally, is it normal for the car to squirm around and pull left and right on roads where there are ruts worn into the pavement? The car doesn't pull or squirm on straight and level roads under accelleration or braking, but when I am on a road where the pavement has grooves or ruts the car starts wanting to go all over the place.

Overall, I love the car, but I just want to make sure than none of these issues are things I should be worrying about.

Thanks.

The engine will hang in the gear rather than just up shift. Keeps your RMP's up for racing and things like that. Most cars will just up shift and go about their way. Nothing wrong at all the car is meant to do that.

if you dont want the car to hang in the gear just tap the shifter to the right even in sport mode and it will relieve the RPMs. I dont know if that fact but i do it all the time and it seems to work for me.

Welcome to the board and congrats on your purchase. I love my 55 and hope that you do as well...

Regarding the temp gauge, I refer to mine as a random number generator.

I seem to recall someone mentioning awhile back that the temp is a "calculated" temp and not an actual thermometor measuring the temp of the outside air.

Not sure of any more specifics than that--but you might try a search and see if you can dig up anything.

there is an actual thermometer. It's by the passenger side fog light. It looks like the skinny end of a turkey baster but it's black rubber.

Your thermometer may be broken or if there is sunlight or a lot of heat comming off of the road, it can affect the temperature reading.

e1000 is correct. The outside temperature sensor breaks often enough and is cheap to replace -- buy a new one at the dealer. This happened on my C43 alot.
It is normal for your C55 to downshift automatically when you are coasting down a hill, etc. You have to keep upshifting if you want to coast.
The OE suspension on a C55 is actually very good and rather sensitive, it is normal for your car to pull when there are ruts in the road. If it does not pull on a flat road with no imperfections, there is nothing wrong with your car.
Regarding the check engine light and the gas cap, 90 percent of the time the check engine light only comes on when the gas cap it not closed tightly. If you close the gas cap firmly and the check engine light still comes on, the gasket on your gas cap is probably no good and you need a new gas cap (also cheap). However, I think it takes the ecu a couple of start stop cycles for the fault to clear and for the light to go off after you tighten the gas cap. It should not have anything to do with the battery.
Congrats on your purchase. Overall C55 is a great and bullet proof car.

Thanks for the clarification. I'll take a look and see if it's broken.

Thumbs up Thanks

Hey guys, thanks a lot for all the replies, really helped to put my mind at ease and enjoy the car even more. Like I said before, overall I love it, the only thing that I'm not happy with is the stereo.

I mean my last car, an 07 Pontiac G5 (not exactly in the same league I know) had a system that blew the C55's out of the water IMO in terms of functionality, ease of use and even sound quality with the factory sub-woofer.

No RDS, no satellite radio, speakers that leave a lot to be desired, no EQ, why did they do such a horrible job on this one aspect when the rest of the car is amazing?

Having said that, can anyone suggest a good head unit to replace the OEM version with? I've looked at a couple touchscreen GPS/DVD ones, but I was curious if anyone had upgraded their C55 and had any thoughts.

Also, just to clarify, the check engine light is not coming on, the message center is showing the "Check Gas Cap, See Owners Manual" message. I'm waiting for the dealership to order me a new owners manual as they didn't have the original with the car.

if you register your car at www.mbusa.com, it should let you download your manual in PDF form.

Uh you can add sat. I have it. Do some more research. That being said, it leaves a lot to be desired.
