Problem with self levelling Xenons

Hi,

Been a while since I posted. I have a 2001 C32, UK spec with original equipment Xenon headlamps.

In the last few days the auto self levelling in the lamps have stopped working. The result is that the beam pattern is about 5 yards in front of the car making driving in the dark very difficult.

When I switch the headlamps on, they momentarily dip down and back up, but they are not coming up as much as they should do.

Does anyone know if these lamps can be serviced?

Cheers
Alan

Alan,

I'm having the same problem with my 05 C55. My drivers side low beam would not level sometimes and be pointed at the ground while the passenger side is fine.

this happens once a month maybe. i'm unsure whether the motor in my headlight is broken or the sensor for the autoleveling is broken.

since both of your lights are pointed at the ground and your lights go up/down to start, i'm more inclined to say that maybe your sensors are malfunctioning.

Self level lamp systems have a device on the front and rear axles, these leveling controllers have an arm fixed to the chassis,,if an arm comes off or is broken, the then the lamp sinks to the default position.

When hooked up to STAR it will tell you the fault

Thanks Television. I had a bit of a "debate" about work undertaken on the control arms by my local dealer while under warranty last week. Then suddenly this problem appears. What next ? The car is 7 years old, but only has 43,000 miles under it.

This happened to me after I had some H&R springs fitted to the car.

It seems lowering the car meant that the control arm fastened to the front anti roll bar ( the one television refers to ) was no longer working due to having to go beyond it's range of adjustment when trying to set the headlights to the correct level.
the fix was to have a new control arm fitted which was modified to work with the cars lowered ride height

I had the lower control arms replaced recently, and had the EXACT same problem. Turned out to be that the self-levelling arm had flipped to the incorrect angle (e.g. from > to < if that makes any sense), causing the projectors to point almost straight down (only illuminating a few feet in front of the car, albeit brightly). Tech reoriented the arm's joint to the correct position, and the proper range of motion and levelling effect shortly followed. GL with your fix!

Thanks everyone, this gives me the necessary info to go back informed to the dealer and get it fixed at their expense.

Cheers
