Post DVD Command

I'm very close to purchasing a new c32. Had a question on the Command system. My dealer tells me that MB will be replacing the CD-ROM Command system w/ a DVD version -- not sure when. I guess several other MB models are already shipping w/ it.

Does anyone have an eta for when the DVD Command will ship in the C32? In the mean time, is the CD-ROM system worth the $2000? How's the performance, level of detail, etc.

Thanks!

Porsche Turbo Stage 4, Cayenne S ... gone C43, C32, ML55 & Ducati 999.
Really probable in the ‘04 C32 model, as well as with the Active Bi-xenon lights, for mention some changes. Also there is a rumor that the ’04 model will have F1 shifting at the steering wheel as the 55’s.

If you travel a lot outside of your local area (say maybe more than 500 miles) the DVD will be useful.

My CD contains the several states surrounding Texas, for instance. I rarely go outside that region (actually I've never driven outside of Texas in this car) so the DVD would probably do me little good.

The 2003 ML has DVD navigation, but it uses a different system so it is not easily comparable.

The W211 E-class has DVD but it is not yet available (sometime this spring), It is supposed to have a wider screen. No one really knows a lot about it yet, as far as I know.

What is active bi-xenon and how is it different from the current bi-xenons?

thanks for the info.

Anyone have any user experiences w/ the CD-ROM Command system? Wondering if it's worth the $2K. I'm familiar with the BMW and Lexus systems (both (DVD-based).

I'm probably not venturing outside the Texas area, so switching CDs is not that big of a deal. Just wondering about level of detail, response times, etc. I'm willing to deal w/ a little inconvenience just to have the gadget!

Anyone have any comparisons to the BMW or Lexus system (or other DVDs)?

Thanks!

Lexus, I don't know; but comparing w/ my X5 3.0's Navi system. I'd say that the Navi on C32 is much better. The difference in the level of details can be noticed, quite significantly. There are a lot more minor roads being mapped into MB, and when you try to allocate a Point of Interest (say a restraunt or a bar), you have plenty more choices from a particular city/area. It could be better software, or more precise Navi hardware. Another convenient feature that I don't remember X5 had was the auto dimming voice function (or whatever the name was). While listening to music and using Navi at the same time in your C32, the music would temperarily lower when Navi girl is trying to tell you where to go. W/ the X5, you get a complete mute of music.

That's about all that I can tell in terms of my experience. Good luck.

How is the load time? Is it fast like the DVD navigations or do they take a minute to load the route?

How fast is the route recalculations? On our Acura, it sometimes takes a minute to recalculate.. By the time it gives me a new route, I would've past the street already.

The disc initialization time is about 30 seconds. This is when you put in the Navi CD, or just started your car. In terms of loading a location, I'd say it's about 30-45secs range. It's not amazingly fast, as far as I could tell.

I have the COMAND/CD-ROM navigation in my 2002 C320. I have driven the car locally and from my home near Washington DC to Wisconsin. I have used COMAND locally and long-distance and find it extremely useful. The level of detail is such that I was able to use the navigation system to guide me to my father's cemetery, the first time I visited after the funeral. (At the funeral I was taken there by limousine and was not paying attention to directions). The disk even showed the roadwork within the cemetery. My daughter goes to a college in rural Wisconsin and the disk had good restaurants as points of interest in the small Wisconsin town. While I have not used other nav systems and have no point of comparison, the time the system uses to calculate routes is satisfactory to me.
