Battery/Alternator red warning light comes on, while power-steering dies?!?!

Battery/Alternator red warning light comes on, while power-steering dies?!?!
My wife was picking me up today, when all of a sudden she says she can't turn the steering wheel, and the red battery/alternator red warning screen comes up saying to take it in for a service. The tow company says a belt probably broke, and that is why the battery/alternator is not getting charged. Anybody had the same issue? If so, what was the actual problem, and how much was it to fix?

I should add that the car drives fine, steering aside. Takes some muscle to turn the wheel, but the transmission and drive-train seems to be ok; gassing and breaking work as usual.

No the car didn't shut off. Just the power steering went away, the battery/alternator red warning came on, w/ another message "under voltage consumer defective". Gassing and braking works, just not the steering.

If its just the power steering, I have no clue.. It may be the belt.. as for warning signs for bat / alt, replacing parts above may solve the issue.
Check for power steering fluid level as well..

you have alternator failure. search the forum for more info.
folks are disseminating a lot of misinformation on this thread. the c32 has an electrically activated/ powered fan. not belt driven. one look under the hood will show you that fact.
in fact if the serpentine belt failed you would be immobile..or should be..as the car will immediately overheat due to waterpump not working.
you can drive the car but as the battery discharges various systems will shut down. the car will run approx 1.5 hrs on a fully charged battery without anything draining it.

alternator? your alternator going bad is going to have no affect on your ps unless it locked up and caused the belt to break. so it sounds like a belt broke. they have things called hood releases, pull that and take a look under the hood.
