Different mufflers - who's tried what?
So I just had dual exhaust put on my new truck (F-150) and went with the Flowmaster Super 40-4 and the thing sounds absolutely amazing! I had the 50 series on my old truck and liked it, but I was seriously missing out on this one.
Anyway, it got me wondering....what would something like that sound like on our cars? Obviously not the same at all, but I have yet to hear of anyone trying a Flowmaster of any series on our cars.
I know the Magnaflow exhausts haven't had good reviews among the E55 guys, but outside of Eisemann, Kleemann and the likes, there doesn't seem to be much experimenting with different mufflers on the 32.
I will be doing quad exhaust in the very near future (just need a shop willing to trim my bumper) and am trying to narrow down my options. Debating on a full 3" exhaust, dual mufflers with quad exhaust (like C55), cut the tips off stock AMG exhaust and use it as a 1 into 2 and use different tips for the dual exhaust, and the list goes on and on.
Keeping in mind I have no resonators or rear cats and have headers. I want loud, but not stupid ricer tin can loud.
So, what mufflers have people tried? Thoughts?

I heard that Magnaflow is really droney on a C32, so I would skip that one.

I need to take a look and measure, but I'm hoping a small exhaust like the super 44 would fit in the center well of the car and run dual from there back. May not be wide enough...

since you already have headers and secondary cats removed, i think the stock c55 amg exhausts would be a great setup..

I've got a 40 series on mine and I love it. I went with it on a suggestion from the shop that did my exhaust. I went in wanting a Magnaflow, but he talked me into the flow. I loved them on my old muscle cars as well as my street/strip S10. I didn't think it would sound good here, but I was certainly wrong. I deleted the res. and added the Flow. I am thinking of going back in a little while and getting the secondary cats deleted also.

Do you have any sound clips?

it's all been done. I have a in-car clip from alchang with the Kleemann exhaust on the 32 also. I'll upload it later on to youtube.
magnaflow will drone. going the custom route I would suggest using a Borla muffler (no one has done it with Borla). have heard Borla for M3 and M5s...much better than magnaflow.

This one doesn't sound that great, but it may be the camera, it is however a SRT-6 with a Flowmaster:

well i had the flowmaster on my old V6 ford ranger, and absolutely loved it.
Ive been throwing the Borla idea around. I know quite a few people with C5/C6s & Cobras running the Borla, and damn they all sound good. I just dono though

The clip on that SRT6 sounds just about identical to my car. The initial part when he takes off- that's the camera. Once he gets away from the camera a bit and it's not distorting- sounds spot on with mine.

if you use flowmaster or magnaflows that are both similiar straight through designs with little or no sound deadning,,
and you have no RESONATOR or cat it will be loud as hell,, and drone,,
the BORLAS btw are louder than magnaflows the loudest mufflers you can get,,
if you have a resonator and cats, you can put on alot of different aftermarket mufflers,, and it will sound fine...
if you have NO RESONATOR and no CATs you have to be VERY careful what you choose as a muffler as most will be TOO LOUD and DRONE<, as they were designed to be used WITH RESONATORS and CATS.
so really if you have AMG stock muffler, or a REMUS,
and have NO CATS, and NO RESONATOR< that will sound good and fine.. and be a good combo
but if you want a renntech, or magnaflow, or borla, small straight through design, you will need to use a resonator,, and cats
which is fine, they dont huirt performance at all, if you get
straight through high flow resonators bullet types.. and racing cats 200 cell.. quiet car but dont hurt performance
I choose Remus, with X pipe and bullet resonators AFTER the X-pipe,, on my SL
and will soon have headers installed with high flow cats..
you can use the remus designed for you model, more expensive
or just use their different sized REMUS univerals, which are the same just not custom molded but do fit fine
and are like $300 ea only
it sounds good, louder than AMG but quieter than RENNTECH, and MAGNAFLOW.

Flowmasters are not a straight through design. Not sure about Borla, but Magnaflow just has a perforated/louvered pipe the runs through the casing. The casing is filled with some sort of packing material. Flowmasters have no absorbing material like the Magnaflows, but they have channels/diverters (for lack of a better word) to direct the sound and exhaust flow. It's two completely different designs. Not saying one is any better than the other- but still completely different.

borla's not straight through either. AND from the E46 M3 setup I've seen they're definitely not any louder than magnaflow. no drone either.
Supersprint would be a better choice than Remus if you are about to spend $600-700.
Here's the C32 with Kleemann muffler video from inside the car. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1QuFbp6fczA

I'm happy with my SuperSprint. Got the resonator delete and it sounds great. No drone at all. Loving the single tip too. Just something different.

You guys rock! I will have to check out all the youtube clips you guys posted when I get home from work as it's blocked here. I'm having a hard time deciding between 1 and 2. Keeping in mind this will be paired with quad tip, dual exhaust, I'm very interested in:
1. Borla
2. Flowmaster (Super 44 series)
3. Feritta (don't know much about them yet)
Magnaflow is NOT an option for me at all.

I'm trying a pair of CLK63 BS mufflers this weekend. They look the same as the C55 mufflers so fitment is not an issue. I'm going to use a pair of Kleemann tips, if it doesn't look good, I'm going with the quad setup.
Ask your dealer about cutting the rear bumper. They did mine yesterday.

Why not do it yourself with a dremel? Take a little off at a time, get it close, then do the rest with a file or sand paper? Mark it with a marker of some sort, until you are happy that your marker outline matches the other side, then cut away.
That's just me- I refuse to pay anyone for a service that I can provide myself.

One would think but apparently not within a 30 mile radious of me. I've called at least 6 shops so far. I think I need to find the smallest, dirtiest, nastiest shop around here. Make no mistake, I will find a shop and will have this done come hell or high water. It's just proving to be more of a pain that it should be. If all else fails I'll trim the damn bumper myself. I'm just very nervous taking a dremel to a perfectly good bumper.

The reason a shop doesn't want to touch it is the same reason you don't want to. The gamble they take is not worth the payoff. Meaning- it's a <$50 job for them and they run the gamble of having to pay for an entire bumper cover. Same reason some wheel/tire shops don't want to mount customer supplied low profile tires. They run the risk of ruining the wheel, but they don't have the cushion (profit from the tire sale itself) to make it a good pay-in/pay-out ratio.
