The X pipe will only work if you've modded the rest of the exhaust to be true dual. With the X there are two pipes coming in and two going out.
The cross over, and folks correct me if I'm not 100% accurate on this one, is to equalize the pressure and smooth out the sound.
I'm 100% true dual w/X and love every shocked look I get when I hit the long pedal on the right.

ok, what steps would I have to do to have a true dual? I was told just the res delete and removing the second cats w/ a x pipe is all that is needed? I am new with all this so I could be totally wrong, just what I have read though...

Existing Exhaust:
Looks like the letter Y. It is two pipes up by the engine and they beyond the 02 Sensors it goes in to one pipe (with resonators, etc). Towards the back wheels it splits off in to two short pipes again and then to the mufflers.
True Dual:
Looks like the letter H w/o the middle part. At the 02 Sensors it goes straight back to your mufflers with minimal bends (as few as possible for flow). The option is to put in the X pipe so it'd look like the letter H (sans the middle) and insert an X. Hard to describe using keyboard.
Where the cost comes in is with materials and the effort. If you are getting rid of one pipe and putting in two, there is much more "pipe", but much less weight due to removing resonators, etc. There is also lots of welding, bending of pipe b/c it follows a slightly different line than stock.
Hope that helps and maybe someone else can explain it better?

skip the X-remove the cats, and the res and you should be god-true dual set up will run 2 3" SS pipes to the muffs rather then the one that starts that the front of the res pipe-and then splits into the Y at the back of the car-
\ / front cats
I res pipe under the passenger seat
/ \ spilt to the muffs-
