Supercharger woes....not always on

Gang,

I just dropped my car ('02 C32...80k...with a lot of NEW parts (cam, sc clutch/bearings, piston or two, ex valves...too much honestly) off at the stealership (RBM of Atlanta) because the sc works intermittently. No codes thrown, no nasty noises...just no go. If you've ever driven a C32 when the sc is out, you know what I mean...its got less oomph than a C240 4Matic wagon.

Has anybody ever had this happen?

When it happens, its not violent...just a loss of power.

Your IC Pump went bad. The SC overheats and shuts off. About $150.

....and it will not throw a code, most of the time. The car will feel like a riding mower without the SC.

The Bosch unit is standard. The Johnson CM30 (I think) is a nice upgraded unit that should last longer. Several sponsors here at MBW sell them.

I would also recommend investing in something like a CarChip http://www.carchip.com/Products/8226.asp to monitor your IATs and other things. Or you can go with a more sophisticated OBD2 reader. With over
80K miles on the car, you will need something sooner or later.

Yep. RBM says water pump. $850 for parts and labor from them.

I like the sound of $150 better. I'm pretty mechanically inclined but haven't worked on this car at all. What are my chances of pulling this off?

Are you sure they said "Water Pump" and not "IC Pump"?

i dont mean to thread hijack, but i have never heard of this carchip before. have you used this on the C32? i couldnt find if it was compatible on the website.

and do you know any OBDII readers that have a display that ARE compatible and more of a gauge than a scanner? (like a scangauge, but compatible).....and that ISNT the price of a DashDaq?

Most likely your IC pump went bad, a Johnson CM30 should do the trick.

I used the CarChip on my C32 in the past. It can be purchased for less than $100. It just sits plugged in to you OBD2 port and records data. I used it to record IATs, MAP, Speed and RPM. It's an inexpensive way of recording OBD2 data and graph it on you computer.
Something with a display (sort of) that can also record OBD2 data was discussed here: https://mbworld.org/forums/c32-amg-c...2-monitor.html
Did you see this thread? What are you looking to monitor?

Back to normal now...pump replaced. And a very interesting story as well.

When I called back to tell them I didn't want them to do the repair because I could get the Bosch pump for $130 or the Johnson for $175 and simply do it myself...they'd already done the repair. My service manager there - whom I've dealt with more than I care to say - told me if I showed him that I could get the exact same part # for that amount...he'd credit me the difference off of the $495 cost (that's what MB charges for it!!!!).

Showed him this site: http://needswings.com/Bosch-Intercoo...schICpump.aspx

And he did it. Probably only because I've spent SOOOOOOOO much with them.

Probably did it to save face figuring the average MB driver can turn a wrench or comprehend the mechanics of an engine. Good for you on this one. Stealership 1,000,000 us 1!

I think i got same failure than pullejo, ic pump doesn't work. where can i locate this IC pump? Is it close at coolant recovery tank and there goes 3 hoses, 1 to bottom and 2 to top end?

if i remember correctly its on the right side next to the heat exchanger (intercooler) inside the bumper.. it looks like an ac dryer unit but smaller and plastic.. take off the undercarriege plastic covers and you can get to it from their..

the car won't over heat if thats what your worried about. but a malfunctioning intercooler pump will keep the super charger disengaged. So basically you'll be driving a c320 all the way home.

My felt more like a c240 4matic wagon. Total dog. All good now.

And finally having the secondary cats & resonator yanked tomorrow.

without the supercharger I think we're making less HP than even the C240. just think about it takes 70-80hp just to spin that thing. lol

my 150hp 1.8T turbo was quicker when the i/c pump decide to take a dump.
