Muffler opening + upgrading
Hi,
i want better sound, so i decided to open my muffler.
I wanna cut it along the welding-line, but i dont know what i have to put in it...
Only remove all **** in it, or do some pipes from front to the exhaust tips, connect in the muffler with Y-pipe?
Whats better for performance? Doesnt it make a difference?
I would remove all parts in it, and do nothing in it. But whats the better way?

Remove cats and resonator. If that's not loud enough go with an aftermarket muffler and/or headers. On a 32 you won't gain anything from the exhaust short of headers. Cutting into the AMG muffler isn't advised, but it sounds like it's a little late now....

i would just get a aftermarket muffler then trying to modify the oem one. Just get one with a 3'' outlet if you want noise. But most aftermarket mufflers drone when your cruising highway speeds.

...a panty dropper...
There was an M3 I saw the other day out here in LA and it had cats only and it was loud but it sounded like S*!T. It made the M3 turn into a Honda Civic in 2.5 seconds. I enjoy my exhaust for now. Just my 2 cents.

Hi guys, i heared some other Cars with original muffler, without anything in it.
My only question is, what i have to put in it...
I dont wanna some ultra-loud sound, only some deep "growl".
I opened it, and i saw this:
http://img42.imageshack.us/gal.php?g=cimg53472.jpg
What would you do? Remove all pipes in it, or only remove the insulating material? Or remove all and weld some straight pipes in it?
If you understand it wrong:
i DONT want to get more Power! I know that! I only wanted some louder and little bit aggresive sound. And i dont wanna lose power

Here is an old soundclip of mine with just resonator and rear cats deleted. You want deeper than this? Short soundclip
(disregard the 55 badge that came with the car and crappy camera)
And this is currently how it sounds. SC whine overpowers the sweet exhaust note at times - With Weltmeister and headers

Hi,
i'm decidet to put in it some bored straight pipes:
Till front to end (to bottom Tips), and wrap it with steelwoll.
I think that the packing is for heat shielding too, so i put into it on upside some steelwoll.
I take photos from all steps. I hope it sounds good.
Now i only have to get these stainless steel bored pipes.
I think many mufflers (Magnaflow for example) made Absorber Muffler. I want to upgrade it to an absorber muffler.

What weird internals. I wonder why they'd go from single to dual inside the muffler, snake it around, and then put a giant case around all that. Doubtful that that short length of double pipes makes any difference.
If I were doing your project, I'd just go single in, put in a Y inside the muffler, and then go dual straight out. Perforated like you show above, wrapped/packed in steel wool, should be good. Interested to hear the results.

It was a fight of 3 hours, to get out the big steel-block. It was very rusty.
I make half-half. Half straigt pipe, and halfe bored straight pipe.
Now the Argon was empty.
Dont be shocked, we only spot-weld it, to change something if its not okay.
I only use the original steel-internals

I'd almost take the entire cover off and just wrap the exhaust with header/heat wrap. Unless you're trying to keep it looking stock that is.
Looking forward to some sound clips!

Looks like the packing is mainly for heat shielding, but could be wrong. Since you have it open you my as well just slap some straight pipes in there instead. Only problem is you have no way of knowing what it will sound like (i.e, drone at highway speed) until it's too late.

Now its ready. I only have to grind the welding lines a little bit.
Here 2 pics:

I stuff ca. 22l Rockwoll in it, its stuffed very hard, so i hope to get some aggresive sound.
I hope that i can do tomorrow some soundcheck.

I wonder if this is why the high flow 2nd cats don't do as much on the C32s vs. the 55s b/c of the rear mufflers (55s are straight through perforated core, no bends). Perhaps if you do 2nd cats now you may get additional gains. Just a thought...

JT,
Everything else in both exhaust systems are virtually identical to the V8 AMG counterparts, this appears to be the only major difference and I would imagine two 180 degree Ubends back-to-back would have to have a decent effect on back pressure & flow rates, making any possible gains from the high flow 2nd cats be negated. Once you correct that it would be logical to assume those potential gains would be noticed as with their V8 counterparts. Again, just a thought...

Phil....let us know if you notice any difference in power at all lol

we think you need sound clips! we want to hear what it sounds like. i dont think any of us have seen the inside of the muffler before and eliminating all those twists and turns and going to a straight pipe setup may impede exhaust flow less and, as AMS suggested, it is possible that there may be something here to benefit from.
so post a sound clip of what it sounds like (preferably at idle and while driving) and if you think you notice a different feel while driving.
