C55 serpentine belt replacement help
Hey, all. I'm in the process of replacing the serpentine belt in my C55, and I'm having a bit of trouble. I removed the old belt, but when trying to install the new belt, I can't leverage the tensioner enough to get the new belt on the final pulley. (I've tried multiple pulleys as the final pulley.)
I guess the real problem is that my pry bar hits the water pump pulley, so I can't push the tensioner any further. Looks like there's still half an inch or so left on the tensioner before it reaches full relief of tension.
The part I'm installing is Dayco #5060937, which is the replacement for the OEM MB/Gates number (6PK2380) off the old belt.
Anyone have a helpful tip?? I'm all out of ideas. Thanks in advance!
Bill

This was on a CLK430 ( they are both M113s), but the last time I did the belt, I did it from underneath the car. The car was on ramps. I ran the belt around everything except the AC compressor pulley, then got under the car and used a 17-inch long, flex head ratchet. I slipped a deep socket over the head of the bolt with the handle of the ratchet pointed toward the passenger side. Pulled the ratchet downward and slipped the belt over the AC pulley. I found that to be much easier than doing it from the top.

I had my belly pans off today and I'm pretty sure from below there is a hex casting to put a socket and ratchet/breaker bar on to release tension on the belt. I wouldn't be prying against anything.

Thanks for the advice. Yeah, I just figured it out and got the belt on. The pry point I was using was awkwardly on the back of the tensioner--I didn't see the fixed socket point low and to the left of the tensioner pulley itself. Doh! Used a socket and an extension (from the top of the motor), and the belt slipped on with a little bit of force. All's well now. Thanks again!

Sorry to resurrect an old thread, but I wanted some clarification. So there is a different bolt to move/release tension on the tensioner pulley besides the tamper proof Torx (not sure on the size) bolt in the middle of it? In the middle of replacing my alternator which means the belt needs to come off.

There is a little 'nub' on which to apply force, it may be kinda of hidden from view if the area is dirty. Look closely, it is to the side of the tensioner pulley itself, but obviously still on the tensioner assembly body.

There is a hex bolt size head underneath the pulley on the bracket. You can't see it from overhead, might need to use a mirror and feel around. Works well one you find it

If memory serves, it's either 14mm or 17mm. But I may be getting my cars mixed up, I was working on an S2000 lately and that was 14mm. But certainly don't use the security torx to relieve tension, you'll just end up undoing that bolt. Might be a bit easier to see it from below. Best of luck! It's cake once you find it.
