One of two things happened, the first and most likely is the original owner went cheap and had dino oil put in instead of synthetic and also ran it for 20k+ miles. The second was they never had the oil changed until the buyer did it at 37k miles when he bought it. Even high mileage synthetic won't sludge like that, my bet is plain old oil got put in and it ruined that motor. I will almost guarantee the oil pick up is clogged shut with black sludge.

You'll never know the truth of the BMW engine. It's neglect on someone's part - and the expense scare will make that guy sing like a birdie that it's everything from bad dealer advice to a long service interval and bad oil.

I don't have any problem with the 10k / 1 year service, but in my case, I change once per year and that equates to 1,500 miles.

I pulled the Valve cover on my car a little while ago.... And it looks like a brand new engine, that was just broken in...So i still use mobile 1 0-40w and continue to support Mercs and AMGS

I used to change religiously every 3k on my previous cars until i realized how long oil really lasts and especially with synthetics. Heeding my good buddy, a MB master tech's words, I just change every 10k, and top off once in a while when the c55 eats a lil oil when i run 'er hard. The oil looks good every time I've changed it too.

As previously stated the chances that happened using synthetic oil is very slim. It just doesn't sludge up like that without some serious miles...

I do my oil changes every 10k miles and my oil is a bit dark, but doesn't look any thing like that. I agree with every one saying that some one put the wrong kind of oil in there.

that guy's car is a piece of junk. bmw, mb, and audi can all EASILY go 10k miles on synthetic. dont believe me? go 12k miles and send your oil to blackstone labs for analysis, they'll tell you that the oil is still good for another couple thousand miles...

I have a customer with a 2004 E500 that went 50k with out an oilchange between 150k-200k miles. We opened the motor cleaned the sludge, he now has just shy of 300k on it and it is running just fine. The pics are of a motor that has improper oil or a ton of miles w/o an oil change. 10k on a synthetic oil change if the ca r is not driven hard is not an issue!

I live in washington and drive about over 30k miles a year since i commute about 70miles each way to work I change my oil about every 9K with the syphon pump i usually extract about 8 quart everytime the oil is usually a bit dark, the filter has no clogs like shown on the above filter I have notice one thing though running 0w 40 when i do the oil change its a litle cleaner but i end up adding about a quart before i reach 9k with 5w40 I dont consume as much oil one other thing becarefull when adding oil since after adding oil in between servicing the service counter tends to adjust I added oil wen it was at 4500miles to service A i started the car and it said 7600 miles to service A I usually reset the trip meeter and go by that instead of the counter since its not quite acurate if you ad oil.

Oil change
I change mine every 5k (mobil 1). Did same with previous AMG C36. Never have I seen oil consumption even under hard track conditions. Sure it may be too often but oil is cheap.

Turbos and SC's put added heat into the engine and that is tough on even synthetic oils.

I always change the oil myself, 0W40 full syn w/ the OE fleece filter every 5 to 7k miles. In four years of hard driving I have only had to add a half a quart of oil between changes once (Long highway trip). But, everytime I change the oil it is jet black, it still flows just fine though and does not seem to have anything in it.
