Ben Sulayem performance and Mohammed Ben Sulayem as you would have guessed by now are hard-core fans of forced induction. Turbocharging and Supercharging is almost a religion for all of us at Ben Sulayem Performance, so it will not come as any surprise to read that we have decided to throw ourselves at the high performance altar and take on our latest project, the AMG C32.
The C32 is a fantastic car in every respect, its compact size means that it is very manoeuvrable in traffic and features superbly balanced handling, steering and excellent brakes. Added to this base package is the AMG enhanced 3.2ltr supercharged V6 engine and modified 5-speed automatic transmission. In True form, Mohammed specified the car with some extra AMG options such as ported and polished cylinder head, free flowing exhaust system minus the original catalytic converters and special programming for the engine control computer. The supercharger combined with the other modifications results in a power output of 430Hp.
Initial impressions of the car are very good, the C32’s light weight and powerful engine means that it accelerates of the line extremely quickly, with the supercharger giving full boost pressure from almost 1000 RPM courtesy of the Eaton style supercharger that AMG fits to the car (similar in design to those used by Jaguar and Toyota)
Its not all good news as although the Eaton style supercharger delivers excellent low to mid range performance, it starts to lose efficiency at higher RPM’s, and this can be felt from the drivers seat, as the car noticeably slows once the tachometer needle exceeds 4500Rpm.
Only Turbocharging can deliver the type of High RPM performance that the customer was looking for – but Turbocharging has the disadvantage of relatively poor low RPM and response, as the engine has to literally rev fast enough to generate the required exhaust flow to drive the turbo chargers – so it was at this point that it was suggested to the customer to twin turbocharge the C32 while still keeping the supercharger in place!
In theory this would give the best features of both forms of forced induction, in that the supercharger would boost the car from low RPM, while the turbochargers could take over at higher RPM boosting the overall power and efficiency of the engine. This could be taken a step further by sequencing the turbo system so that once the turbochargers were making enough boost, the factory supercharger is switched off further increasing horsepower that is lost driving the supercharger.
As we all know, something that sounds good in theory quite often does not work out in real life – so it was with a deep breath that we stuck our neck out and said yes, It can be done!
Currently we are well into the job and up to our necks in Mercedes parts – stay tuned for the finished product!
Thanks..
Tariq

If you do work for them please let me know I want to pick your brain about turbo or S/Cing a car of mine. I am moving to Dubain in August and am currently looking at my car choices.
