Check Engine Light after Fuel Filter Change
I had my fuel filter changed today. When I got the car back the CEL was on and pulling out of the mechanics, the engine sputtered a little and idled rough. I believe that an air pocket from the new filter caused it to temporaily run real lean and triggered the CEL. After 5 or so starts/20 miles/6 hours later the CEL is now off.

Mercedes recommends 40k interval change or fuel filter. They recommended 30k at dealership because it's a c32 AMG. I personally think the filter is good for 70k or more...

I never changed one on any car until my indie MB tech showed me one he had just taken off of an E320. He turned it upside down and the fuel that spilled out was jet black. I was so disgusted I had him change it the next day.

70K is way to long to wait to change it out. I swapped out at 50K and it is amazing how much ***** was it the filter. The toughest part is getting the MB clamps off - they are a major PIA.

So iirc, we have no external filter, only the one that's in the tank that's part of the pump assy?

I looked at the ETS, whatever the online parts catalog is called, and it just shows an integrated assembly within the tank. I hope that it's wrong though.

for c32 it is on the outside, near the left rear wheel. I had my tank cleaned before, emptied all the fuel and removed the rear seats. it was full of red dirt. I would suggest replacing the fuel filters earlier rather than later.

If you use good gas, ie shell Exxon Mobil, you won't have issues. Gas is triple filtered at the pump. I have well over 140000 miles and no issues. If you fill up at cheap gas stations you're asking for problems. I cut open the fuel filter in my 1990 Isuzu just for kicks and it looked clean. It has 125000 miles. West coast gas is very clean.
