AutoX'd the C55 w/ Video
Hey all, just ran the C55 for the second time (3rd time in my life). The local chapter of the Porsche Club of America has a monthly AutoX for $20. You get 8 runs divided into 2 heats. Loads of fun. Definately felt way more comfortable this time. I took an instructor on one run once my times stabalized to get tips. He said there were only really minor things I could work on so made me happy.
In any case, the clips are from all of my 8 runs. I just picked and chose which ones looked the best, so I know there are a few where I didn't take the best line. At the end you get 2 fun runs (untimed, take passengers, kick out the *** end, etc) and that's where the huge slide came from.
Hope you all enjoy, never made a video before.
Camera is a GoPro HD and only mod to the car was 2nd cat delete.

Thanks for the compliments. It was filmed in 1080 on the GoPro, but with the software I was using I couldn't figure out how to make it any bigger than what was on youtube.

I shifted with the gear shift with the car in M and ESP off. Since I came from a 6-speed manual I have a hard time remembering the buttons are there and trying to shift midturn gets confusing when spinning the wheel in circles; usually my hand isn't even over a button.

I tried it once with it in S last month and it was horrible letting it do it's own thing. I'd let off on the back side of the slaloms and they'd roll right into a turn. Halfway through the turn it would upshift and you can't floor it coming out otherwise you just go sideways.
I do however admit the delay is pretty horrible and I readily hit the rev limiter. I think that'll just be a feel it out thing and I'll get use to it and be able to know when to shift the same as my prior manual 6-speed car.

Great job autoxing the C55! It's a fun car, isn't it? I tried autoxing my car last year, and I haven't stopped since.
Couple of suggestions to help you with the shifting on this car. I've found manual isn't really that great due to the delay, unless you're really keen on timing it right. Then again, the autox courses I run are much smaller and quicker. This looked a lot more spread out, and a lot more fun!
I usually put it in S, but I limit the shifter to 2nd. So I shift up twice before I start to prevent the car from upshifting. That way I get into the powerband in the corners where it needs it, but without having to worry about shifting into 2nd.
Also, do use the paddles. It will force you to keep your hands at the 9 & 3 positions. At 1:15 you can see how you almost ran out of lock because your hand was at the top of the wheel. With your hands at 9 & 3, you get the full range of motion, and almost never have to cross hands (depends on the course of course.)
Awesome footage too, it was great to see the car's tires and suspension react!

I'm curious how you fair out against other cars though.

When I was running Ultra High Performance tires, specifically the ones that came with the car when I bought it, Bridgestone Potenza RE760 sport, right smack in the middle of the SCCA F Stock class, or X3 of the PCA class (over 3.5 L engine.)
This year, I got the Continental DW tires, which are a grade above (Max Performance) and it made a noticeable difference. At the last PCA event, I placed in the top 10.
Again, it's hard to say as each event is different, with different number of participants, and different people run different cars and tires.
I'll tell you this though, it's difficult to beat a Miata with R compounds in any car .
With enough mods and practice I'm sure you and your car can be very competitive. I personally do autox to compete against myself, as usually there is not much I can benchmark against, and I haven't seen any other AMG C-Class owners in my area willing to toss their cars around a few cones.
The C55 does make a fantastic track cars though, and it really shines there.

It all depends on the tires.
