Shredded belt

Hey guys, I shredded my belt last night and need a replacement. I'm running a Renntech 178mm pulley and need to find out what size the belt is. Also where to buy a new one. Thanks!

Chazz,

Try Rob from Needswings. I think they would have some Gatorbacks for you and would know about the sizes. Good luck!

with a 178, you should be running the stock size belt, so OEM belt should be fine

the Gatorbacks is another option. and yah, i bet Rob at Needswings has some laying around

Even if you're running a Code 3 SC pulley, it's the stock belt as well.

The Kleemann uses a Chebby belt!

Got my belt yesterday and I'm going to install it tonight. Anyone have some instructions? I have the pulley diagram but could someone tell me what all you have to remove to get it installed?

Thanks Dingleberry however, that thread doesn't really give instructions on installing a new belt. Like I said, I have the diagram but you can't exactly just slip it on. Seems like you would have to remove some things to get it to slip over all the pulleys.

remove the top ider bracket and start there. route according to the diagram and use the smooth idler next to the tensioner to slip the belt on last. then release the tensioner

I can't seem to get the belt to slip over the tensioner. I swear the belt is like a half inch to short. I have verified that the belt is on correctly, but it's just to short. If I pull the tensioner pulley counter clockwise as far as it can posibly go, it still won't slip on.

I got the part from Rob at Needswings. Here is a pic. Can anyone confirm that this is the correct belt?

dont try to slip it over the tensioner last. use the smooth idler for the last pulley its much easier

Thanks dreamer. I'll give it another go in the morning. I put it away for the night.

BTW, is it always really, really tight to put on a new one?

The belt pictured is indeed the correct belt.

It can be really tight if you have the best misaligned anywhere along the path... double- and triple-check your routing that the belt is indeed correctly seated into the grooves for all of the ribbed pullies. Honestly, it can help if you have a buddy who can hold the tensioner while you push the belt onto the last smooth pulley (aftermarket RT idler, water pump pulley, etc) you choose to use. But if not, it's certainly doable if you're by yourself.

It must just be me. I have verified that the belt is on correctly and not misaligned in any way. But even with a friend helping me we can't seem to get the belt on. It seems about 1/2 inch to short. And now after pulling on that tensioner as many times as I have, it's now stripped. /facepalm

Are you sure that you have a 178mm pulley?

I just went and measured. It's 7" across. I had to use a conversion chart but 7" = 177.79999999999998. All the work was done by Dyno-Comp in Scottsdale AZ. by the prior owner. I'm going to give Dyno-Comp a call in the morning and see if they have any suggestions. I'm stumped.

Maybe RT's kit uses a different belt. AFAIK, that would make it a different approach than evosport, LET/EC, ASP, or Kleemann... but it's possible I guess.

How did you strip the tensioner? It's a torx socket, isn't it?

Best of luck... always stinks to have a repair not go as smoothly as it should.

I called Dyno-Comp and they told me that it "should" be a stock belt. That's what he said they use.

I simply couldn't get it on. I happened to pick up the shredded belt that was still in my garage and was going to throw it away when I looked very closely at it and could make out some numbers. It was a Napa brand belt and after a bit of cleaning I could actually make out the numbers. So I ran down to Napa Auto Parts and ordered the belt.

The stock belt is 1 3/32" X 115 1/8".

The one that was on my car is 1 3/32" X 116 1/4".

Just over 1" larger. Boy did that 1" make a difference! Damn thing slipped right on!

I can't believe after having looked over that old belt so many times I had never noticed the numbers before. No wonder I usually leave stuff like this to my mechanic.

I now have a stock belt for sell. PM me if your interested.
