Rain Sensor Not Working?

Hey everyone. I have a 2003 MB C32. Just bought it last month.

At the time I test drove it, it was raining. I put the wipers in the 1st mode and noticed that they were automatically adjusting speed depending on the rain condition.

After purchasing the car, I replaced the wiper blade and applied RainX repellent to the windshield. Now the sensor doesn't seem to be working. When I put the wiper in the 1st position, they just do the normal thing, a wipe every 5 seconds or so.

Any ideas?

So if the sensor can't sense correctly it automatically goes to intermittent mode?

im not an expert here but from my own observations, a few times when i started the car with a bunch of water on it and put it in the auto mode, it went real fast at first then revertted to every 5 or so like your talking about, and eventually it functioned as it normally should so its possible with the solution coating the windsheild it cant sense properly, im not sure how the rain sensor works cause ive never really looked into it but it would make sense if it couldnt feel the water on the sensor area.

Is it possible to DIY install a new sensor? I thought it had to be like somehow sealed to the windshield.

The rain sensor is an easy DIY. It clips in as suggested.

One thing to keep in mind is the wipers do not function properly if the hood switch is not working. When the car thinks the hood is open it turns off the wipers. After you get the car up to speed the wipers work normally.
