C55 vs c63 cost vs performance

Ive lurked around a bit and really havnt found the information Im looking for so I thought I would just throw it out there. Its time to upgrade my c43 and Im going to go either c55 or c63. Most of the threads Ive read are about aesthetics of the two cars. Im wondering about cost vs performance.

The cost of a c55 is a steal these days. It seems I will be able to get a c55 and install both a kleeman LSD and a Kleeman supercharger for less than the cost of a c63. By many accounts.. these two mods will make the c55 superior in performance to a c63. It seems the lsd is a must have mod.. the supercharger is just a want mod.

With only $40k to spend.. I wouldnt be able to mod the c63 at all.

Once again.. Im primarily interested in a modded c55 vs a stock c63 in terms of real world performance not track times. Any input or thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

If only you were buying a few months back, there was a kleeman C55K that sold for around $25k and it was in tip top shape. You could have had amazing performance for almost half of your budget. You may want to see about finding a C55 that already has the supercharger. If you don't want to mod and just want a warranty, the C63 will be quick and probably include a warranty, but you'll be hit with a good chunk of depreciation over the term of ownership.

My choice would be an already modded Kleeman C55K, then save the rest of money to buy the C63 in a year or two. The price should drop a lot because of the updated body style and the coupe.

I have a clk55 with kleemann blower and it is better than our c63 in many ways (for what I need it for).
PM me for details.

The build quality of the c63 was not as good as the c55 or clk55 for my taste, and my clk55 rides better, better fit and finish, and is faster.

All my 2 cents from someone who until this weekend owned both and sold the c63 to get the wife a bimmer.

GL. And PM for more info.

I don't want to get into flame wars on the benz site from c63 fanboys

I would be patient and look for a used c55 with kleeman mods already completed. They can be had for a bargain.

Listen to this man, he truly knows what he's talking about. I can vouch for him too, seen his c63 and followed his Kleeman build on the w209 AMG forum.

Not true. A modded C55 (LSD/Kleemann SC kit with headers) will beat a stock C63. The C55 Kleemann S/C is a very low 12/high 11s car. Haven't seen a C63 right out of the stock BOX that'll do those numbers. Close, BUT not quite. Modded C63 is a whole other world and yes, its faster and better than a C55, BUT don't paint with a broad stroked brush here. Mike's car (Alumar's C55 Kleemann S/C that just sold last month) would do 120 in the qtr at about 12 flat. A stock C63 will not do that. Again, very close, BUT not quite and a new C63 will set you back close to 80K or more.

The large majority of C63s (totally stock with 0 mods/stock tires, stock tune) are running about 12.4 -12.8 at anywhere from 111-115. Throw on an MHP tune or EC Tune on the C63 and its a different scenario.

Jake's old modded C32 would give a "stock" C63 fits all day long......I expect Lenin's would do the same.

Note, I have total respect for the C63 and if I had my druthers, I'd be getting me a C63 coupe with the P31, MB Tex and Carbon Fiber package. Now that's a car!!

IMO I like the interior of the C55 better than the pre-facelift C63's interior. Sure, there a few details I would love that are newer...but overall I prefer the C55's.

Our C63:
Front hl washer door would stick open or just come open while driving.
Front bumper towing notch cover same story.. poor quality.
Rear windscreen vibrated bad and squeeked loud while driving.
Sunvisor mirror flap falling apart. Low quality.
Squeaky brakes (prob from the perf pkg, and street use).
Poor radio reception even with the prem sound system.
Handsfree phone almost unusable due to road noise on other end. Too much NVH to hear the amg driver side.
Used about 1qt oil/1000 miles with wife driving. (not sure if normal).
The exahust note while intoxicating for the kid in me.... was a PITA for daily driving. Attracting too much attn. (but I'm getting older
Major heat soak and power reduction on hot days. Much more than one would expect from a n/a car. all IMHO.

The good part is the engine. Once my clk was faster..... my love affair ended for the c63 and we sold it.

If you get one.... be patient for a used one, and track the heck out of it! Enjoy it where it was designed to be used.

Loud - none taken brotha!

Wow, interesting and rather disappointing to hear. I thought MB got its **** together on build quality in 04/05. But looks like they dipped again in 08/09? Damn, I was thinking about a gen-1 C63 next year.

xx - spend some time in one before putting down the cash and see for your self.
We had ours for 2 years of daily driving and formed the above opinions.

I'm no hater. For what it is, it's a fun car, but there are other options out there.

If I was in the market for a c63, vs c55 (w/blower), or E55...... to be honest I'd go for the e55 and daily drive it, mod-it, track-it, and come out at the end of the day with the best performing car (1/4 mile and daily driver) for the lowest bucks....... and the most comfortable car as well. (All hind-sight).

A few C55s will still have a bit more power than a heavily modded C63. I averaged 475rwhp on the DD dyno at 3pm in 86F weather on Saturday while a C63 with LT headers, tune and intake pulled a 448rwhp in 75F weather temps at around 9am the same day on the same dyno with the same calibrations. The fans were pathetic. They were small and low velocity causing my car to retard timing immediately after the first pull. Rich tuned my my car with maximum safeguards against detonation caused by any signs of heat buildup.

Thanks for the input! In continuing my reasearch I found the gas mileage numbers... ya that's a deal breaker there. Looks like a modded c55 for me.

It isn't all about HP/Torque for everyone. Some people do care about improvements in chassis dynamics, braking and overall generational improvements that come with an upgrade. Don't get me wrong, I own one, but the C55 is a rather dated platform at this point.

Agreed XXAA.... but who really uses all the chassis refinements in a daily driver fun car?

For the track our 09C63 with PP would be the ticket. But to be honest we daily drive our cars with the occasional blast down the road on the weekend. In no way are we track people .

So take my input with a grain of salt.

Thanks for your input Jeff. Feedback from someone who actually owned the car is great. I live 20 minutes from all the canyons you can name in the Rockies. Trust me, I can feel the chassis refinements even on a casual Sunday evening drive.

If track-use was the goal, I would ditch MB altogether and get something with a propellar logo. No one does better for that niche and their new 1M is supposed to be the ticket.

One of my Fav cars of all -time, the 2006 E55 particularly. I dunno though, the problem is, many guys are complaining of leaking tanks on these things?? Issue does NOT appear to have been resolved. Ask MooseJaw!!!

Ever drive an S2000? Prolly one of the best handling cars of all time, bar none. I owned one and cept for the powaa, which revved like a motorcycle, it handled like a slot car ..........PUT some gumballs on there, Potenzas or Hoosiers and it was unbeatable........until the straights that is!! One can be gotten in the teens now!! It had better handling than a Miata without the low power.

My ultimate car between the C55 and the C63, a 2010 or 11 C63 with the P31. They are starting to drop like a rock with the 2012s hitting the docks.

Had an RSX-S and while its not in the same league as the stook, I am NOT a fan of revving the nuts out of tiny motors to get moving to the grocery store. Sold my E46 M3 for the same reason. That's why the 1M might be my next purchase - 360 ft-lbs from 1500 RPM and M handling. It's ugly as sin, but hey,
