SUCK! Hit a retread!

So I was driving on I-75 in heavy traffic when a tractor trailer in front of me lost a tread. Because of the traffic I couldn't avoid it. Knocked out all 3 screens in the front took some paint off the bottom of the bumper, and broke my undertray in front of the driverside wheel. any idea's where I can get the screens other than the dealer?

So was just checking out getmercedesparts.com
and the mesh grilles are $190/each for the foglight surrounds and $268 for center. haven't found the undertray yet. but in case anyone is looking for a new replacement 5.4L Engine for their C55 you are looking at $64,000!!!! um I think if I needed a factory new engine I would just buy a C63.

lets say I have enough damage to warrant an isurance claim, would I be able to get this covered under my uninsured motorist policy? Because that has no deductible. I know it can't be collision, because that would state it was my fault and it wasn't, there was nothing I could do to avoid it. But if it is comp, I have a $1K deductible, so it would have to be more than that to warrant a claim. just the grills alone are at $648 and would be way more through MB. Can't find the tray yet. It is just the part that covers the washer bottle in front of the driver's wheel that is damaged, not sure if that is seperate from the main tray or not. happend today on way to work so will exam more this evening. part #'s anyone?

I'm thinking group buy, the American wife took out one of the grills thanks to a tire thread the other day also.

Nice surprise on the price. For the price of one of the side grills I want to see a name plate with the name of the AMG technician that made it. I thought that I was immune to sticker shock after owning an M5 and a couple Maseratis.

during lunch I had another look, tore up my bumper pretty good ripped a big chunk out of the bottom, glad I didn't have a lip. Broke the tab that holds the grille to the bumper on the driver side. Looks like a new new grille, bumper, lower grilles and clips, and looking at the tray under the car it looks like it is the inner fender liner and not the tray. I need to take it for an estimate. Foglights and headlights came out unscathed though.

wow that sucks, I hear you though. Around my school there is a lot of construction going on and there are constantly trucks driving around with dirt and debris flying off. Especially on the freeway. When I see a truck, I gun it to get out of there way. I hate hearing the little rocks on my winshield.

Calling insurance to get an estimate or an adjustor out would worth a shot...but with such a high deductable it might be more cost affective to get it sorted on your own. Take it around to a few body shops and get an actual quote of damages, let them know you're out of pocketing and try to haggle on labor.

New bumper, all grills, lower panels, and paint will be well over 1k and that's done correctly. I think you should take it to your local dealer and have them do you a quote, because you know it won't be cheap. I'm thinking with parts and labor, that's if they get you a new bumper, will be close to 2k or more. If you do it yourself on the cheap, you'll still be out of pocket at least $700 including parts and labor, but it won't be perfect. I say, spend a bit more and get it done right, as long as it does not increase your insurance rate.

I checked on ebay and the only parts I found were the left and right grills and they were only $30 less than what you found on parts.com. I would have the insurance cover it and go with a clk63 bumper if you can wing it. Think of it as a necessary upgrade.

Yeah I was thinking that a CLK63 bumper might be the way to go. Will the existing fogs work with the CLK bumper seemed like they were slightly different with Chrome rings or something. I have also been looking to get the frontend resprayed anyway because of all the rock chips, so this facilitates that as well.

I think the fogs are specific, but if you have to pay for anything out of pocket, just part out your current bumper. I'm sure you can get some thing for it in the condition that it's in.

Good thread to see all that you would need for the conversion. https://mbworld.org/forums/clk-class...mg-bumper.html

I made a set out of wire cloth. $20. I'm not gonna pay "the man" ~ $500 for a couple of plastic parts that cost $5 to manufacture when I can make stronger parts that pass more air for $20 a can of black spray paint, and a couple hours of time! It's not for everyone, but works for me.

Dude, that sucks, however you should be happy to be alive. Let me tell you guys a story.

On March I went to a round-trip from Miami to Tampa in my C55, same as you. I was in the I-75 passing Ft Myers. Everything was going fine, until I saw a semi in front of me, with one of its tires blowing up in slow motion (8 cars length in front of me). Debris were flying on all directions. The guy was on the middle lane, so I used the left shoulder and pressed the gas to avoid a van in front of me that was steering to the left as well, while braking. Honestly, I thank the decision of buying the C55, it took the maneuver as it should be.

I thought that was going to be the only fright scene on my trip. However, when I was arriving Tampa, leaving St Petersburg, I saw a white pickup "flying" from the left lane right into the middle-dirt section that lies in-between the 2 I-75 opposite lanes. That happened after getting off a bridge in St Petersburg. I was on the left lane as well, so I applied the brakes because there were people stopping by on the left shoulder to help the people of the pickup. I called 911, with a shaking hand, and I resumed my driving.

I arrived Tampa thinking of what happened, and I raise a pray for the people in the truck, and for my sake. I had a job interview in Tampa, but I was feeling very nervous. Anyway, the interview finished and I prepared myself for the return to Miami.

Just when I was arriving to the Sunshine skyway bridge (beautiful sight BTW), a red Kia, again, had a tire blow, but this time the car was only 10 yrds in front of me. I couldn't maneuver this time, since I was hitting traffic. I had to brace myself and I heard that horrible noise of the rubber pieces hitting my front bumper. Man, I almost couldn't believe it! 3 incidents on the same trip! what are the odds of that? I had to pull over to the right shoulder this time to check for damages and if the tires were in good condition. Happily everything was fine. I calmed down and resumed my driving.

When I arrived home, my wife received me, she said she saw me very pale and she thought I was a ghost (she is very sarcastic). I just gave her a big hug and then I told her what happened. She said God was on my side, I believe that too.

I had a similar issue - following a dump truck filled with gravel and concrete debris. You can imagine what happened...

That sucks. Good excuse to upgrade to a new look for the front end. I won't even follow trucks that don't have rear mudflaps. I took a golf ball sized rock into my windshield a few years ago. I feel your pain.

yeah my quotes were between $2200 - $5000 (guess where MB of TPA fell into the mix) In reality, I can get it done for much less, I really don't have to replace the bumper cover because the crack is underneath, as long as I can get the new underbody pan to stay in place. then I just need the screens clips and a respray. The big decision factor is that my insurance said if I do a claim then it will fall under collision which means my insurance will go up, so I am going to go the self repair route.
