I have the same problem. I don't have to floor it but I do have to put quite a bit of pedal down. (Usually fairly steep hills around town, not so much on the freeway)
I don't think it's his Pump. I just changed mine about 2 months back. I've always had this issue also. I'm guessing he probably feels a jerk right before going up the hill too. (Torque converter)

Fuel filter clog when trash shifts or trash in fuel tank or have you ever had tranny serviced?

Had the same issue as well
Car had issues going up hills. It would jerk and shutter going up. Do you hear a slight grinding sound at certain times as you drive? In my case the trans died. I got maybe 1k miles out of it before it completely broke and had be towed. 4k repair.

If he's having what I have (and I think he his) My cars maintenance is well up to date. Fuel filter has less than 8k on it tops. Trany flush already done about 12k ago.
No grinding has Her0 suggested. Just a jerk and loss of power. Once I gas it, it's fine. Honestly makes me want to punch the steering wheel. As of now I've just learned to deal with it.
I have a new CPS sensor on the way that's supposed to help with jerk. When I replace that, I'll report back and see how that helps.
With the exception of the CPS there's almost nothing left in the car to replace.

Changing spark plugs: the engine being very rev-vy! Love it! Yet there was a fuel-mixture error.
Cleaning the air-sensor: This was to resolve the error. After cleaning though, my engine was not as responsive yet better.
I suggest changing the air sensor.
