Switch underneath gas pedal?

Can someone tell me what the "switch" is under the gas pedal. I am not sure that switch is the proper word but when you press the pedal to the floor it hits a stopper. You can then keep pressing the pedal and it feels like it engages some kind of actuator or switch. You can feel it on your foot.

That's the kickdown, downshift to as low a gear as possible and go!

Thank you! So if I press the pedal to the floor, but not far enough to engage the switch, will my ECU still interpret this as full throttle, or do I need to press it down further?

When I put the pedal to the floor without going to the kickdown my car usually only goes to 3rd gear, but the kickdown goes to 2nd and gives me the power faster.

to my undestading if you push the dedal down without touching the switch you willbe at full throttle but you will remain in the same gear ( and move up from there) but if you hit the switch the car will downshift and upshift only at redline the difference will be perhaps accelerating from 4th at 60mph or accelerating from 3rd gear at 60mph

It's the "go go go" button

And I believe francoisisp nailed it correctly.

absolutely correct. i have this app on my phone called torque that allows me to connect to my ecu and do a bunch of things via bluetooth. i tried putting my foot down to before the "kick down button" and it showed throttle open 100%

It's supposed to kick down the transmission to the lowest possible gear.

Only problem I see with it is that the engine can jump to 5k+ rpm where it gets out of the power band and then kinda just floats along till it gets to the next gear. I personally feel more power in a higher gear pushing fuel @ 3k rpm. At least thats what my neck says.
