Proper time to invest in a C55?

Hey everyone, I tried to look for an old thread to comment on, but couldn't so I decided to make a new one. Anyways, I've been wanting to get a C55 for awhile now but I've been tentative to get one because of the fluctuating gas prices and economy. I know there's the sticker MPG but could you guys tell me what you actually get and how far you get on a tank. At the moment I've got a C280 and it averages about 17 MPG, mainly because I do city driving, and around 264 miles per tank. I would love to own one but I would just like to hear some of your opinions from experience of owning on yourself. Thanks a lot!

hey andrew, on the highway with my tune i average about 24mpg. in the city at moderate driving i get between 14-16 (i was in the hills of SF yesterday and got 13) they get surprisingly good mileage. big motor, small car. it makes sense. hope that helps. and the best time to buy a car is now, best time to sell one is summer.

I don't do much freeway driving. My way to work is mostly a 55mph speed limit, but there are stop lights. I normally am around 15mpg. Dropped a little after the supercharger.

Mine doesn't go out much but on the highway cruising between 75 and 85 I'm getting about 22mpg. It's a great car.....

17ish, mostly freeway driving. But like michael_kuzni said. Small car big engine. You hardly notice hills so its not like you have to give it much gas to go over them. The car keeps trucking along.

I would go with opposite though... best time to buy a V8 is when prices are high and people are all worried about the MPG's. Which is usually July / August.

'06 C55, '14 Audi S4, '09 Range Rover Sport, '07 Lexus ES350,
Andrew,

My normal commute is on local roads. 6 miles to the gym and another 6 miles to my office. Then its about 10 miles back to my house at the end of the day. My average mpg is consistently in the low 17's. If I get to include a few longer drives during the week (more 10-15 miles without stopping) I'm more in the upper 17's. On the highway I average 21-22 at 75-80mph. I do not have a tune - car is stock.

C55's are great cars - and a big upgrade from your C280. Lots of power and very reliable.

Hope that helps.

I average 19.5 mpg, but I've had 24mpg road trips. I put K&N drop-in filters but no other mods. I'll sell you my beautiful red 06 if the price is right.

C55
I get anywhere from 13-21 depending on driving style and traffic. If I don't get spirited in my driving I will get 17 sitting in DC traffic, which sucks.

It doesn't sound like there will be a big difference in MPG between the 55 and 280. Not sure what octane fuel you run in the 280, but the 55 will need 93 or 91 adding maybe $5 a tank over 87. (at least in my area)

Good luck in your search. The C55 is definitely a blast to drive.

C63, C55 (Sold)
In my case I drive (daily) only 12 miles when going to work, on the street. It gives me 16 if I'm not pushing it. On the highway, 220 miles to Orlando, it gave me 21 (I just enjoy passing others on the highway, so that was not economical at all). If I use the car to go to work only (and parking it on the weekends) I consume a full tank after 2.5 weeks, more or less. Personally, I don't see that you'll have much of a difference between the C55 and your C280, gas-wise. However, the feeling of driving a C55 is completely different, you will really enjoy the car. That being said, I will keep my C55 even after gas price goes over 5 bucks per gallon. For me it's just worth it. Mine is bare stock, BTW.

to work - 21 mpg avg
from work -14.5 mpg avg
I do oil changes at 7500 and reset the B mileage with oil changes. I am at 7K and average over that entire duration is 18 even.

I am spending $20/day just driving to and from work at $4.01/gal.

I have decided I am going to start looking at 05-07 E320 CDIs this weekend. A friend has one and his average is around 36 mpg. there was a E220 CDI (non US model) in St. Pete about 3 months before I was ready to buy a car (was waiting for our house to sell) wish I could have bought that. it had cloth seats and a 6-speed manual and averaged 40+ mpg.

Just got 24.5mpg at an average of 70mph from Cleveland to Columbus. I was driving like a grandma for the most part.

Yes I for sure will! One more question... How's the sat nav in the C55 because there are some for sale at a good price without one...is it necessary?

if you're referring to the COMAND NAV system, it's decent, but it all depends on how "current" your nav maps disc is... for example, mine is a 2004 disc, so it doesn't have new addresses or new traffic patterns. but more often than not it gets the job done... or you could always use your iphone/smart phone

I actually dont like the Navi unit in the 55 that much. If you know where you are going most of the time I would buy a car without one to save the cash and besides maps are kind of cool..
