Help.. Quaife LSD installed - Gear whine??
Just installed the Quaife in my C32 and the process went really smooth and everything was done very carefully.
On the test drive going forwards is fine with no noise but as soon as i lift off the throttle and coast it would whine until i step on the gas.
In reverse gear it would whine too.
Any ideas would be appropriated..
Thanks

either your backlash is out of spec or your pinion bearing is toast.

The right and left circlips doesn't have the same thickness, same think for bearing but is more easy to see it.
They use different thickness circlips to adjust right and left position and preload on bearing.
Check back lash to.

Honestly,, this is a job for trained personel.
I´ve got a lot of years behind me in tuning cars, but i always leave theese jobs to people who knows what they are doing.
Before it´s totaled,, redo the job. let trained personel do it.

The backlash is indeed adjusted via the circlips dsp is refering to and are not available through MB; they have to be sourced from Unitrax iirc ![Confused](https://mbworld.org/forums/images/smilies/confused.gif)
Since there are some SRT's that use our rear end, I'd guess that if they can source parts for the SRT LSD's they can get the shims for you. Good luck!

I don't have a Quaife, I have a Wavetrac. My diff starting "singing" after my instal. The shop used the clips that came out in the same positions they were from the factory. (didn't mess up) I ended up ignoring the noise for a while, then buying a selection of clips and new side bearings from a Mopar online dealer and having the backlash "adjusted". Backlash was correct according to the shop when it was checked but they adjusted the depth of the mesh with the pinion gear. Now it's much improved but it still makes a little whine at 60 mph. Your going to have to spend until it's silent I'm afraid. I'm using Motul 80W140 at the moment. I really use my car hard and it didn't break before the adjustment or since. All I can suggest it take it back to the installer and do what you've got to do.

SRTs share the same pumpkin as the SLK, and the pumpkin on the SLK is different than the C32s. This means both of them are different from what's on the C32, so no cross shopping for us

Thank you all for your help & support.
I will have the diff dismantled again tomorrow to check everything again.
I hope it's simple, I pray I haven't damaged anything.
Will let you know my findings.

Finally Resolved..
It was the circlips, installed them in the wrong side. (Make sure you mark them to indicate left & right side as the thickness is different)
Left thickness: 4.1mm
Right thickness: 4.2mm
putting them in the incorrect sides was enough to create the whining noise.
I guess when installing I have now learned that all parts should be replaced in exactly the same position, especially when it comes to bearings shims and clips.![Smilie](https://mbworld.org/forums/images/smilies/smile.gif)
Happy man now..

As a note to all attempting to do this on your own. When changing differentials and re-using the same ring and pinion set ALWAYS measure the backlash before taking it apart (and pinion depth if you intend on changing the pinion bearings). There are tolerances in the parts and wear as the gears mesh, setting things to "factory specs" is not always the right answer. You must get the gear sit to where it was when you pulled it apart or there is a good chance that it will make noise.
Just by putting the spacers/clips back in the factory position is no assurance that things will be set up properly. When you look at the tolerance stackup (bearings, Differential, gear etc.) it is very easy to be off by .001"-.002" and wind up with a noisy gear install.
