Exclamation A warning for purchasing brakes pads/disks

Most of you guys don't cut corners and keep your cars well maintained but others don't. Especially sellers who find a cheap way to claim they did service on the car. When it comes to buying brake disks and pads, don't buy NAPA products. Sure they are cheap buy they will hurt in the long run.

First of all, the dust... after less than two weeks of driving... I will probably replace both front pads soon even though they are pretty new.

Then the disks used to have ugly surface corrosion

Which I painted

The rear brakes I did myself and used MB products. They have lower dust and the discs look nice.
Thanks for reading!

pricetag on these parts you paid for, were they dirt cheap?
dirt cheap price tag must tell you as a customer that something's not right!?
are you cutting corners for your C55?

where are these brake parts manufactured?
are they made in China?

if you don't buy all parts from stealership, then stick ONLY with branded aftermarket parts like Mahle, Lemförder, Brembo, Mann etc. etc.
These are known to be 100%

lesson learned, don't buy crap parts!
you have to pay 2-ice for parts and deal with a shop installing them again for you, that's another cost.

I have bought porterfield R4S pads before. They have been good. Even OEM has quite a lot of dust. Both the 350z and the CLK wheels turn slightly brown in only 1-2 weeks on OEM pads and heaps of dust after a month. Of course it probably depends how you drive as well.

Mercedes OEM rotors are coated and Akebono pads have almost no dust (they let off a very slight gray/white dust)

OEM pads are a new compound. Zero dust.

One more thing I forgot to mention.

The wear of the front discs is uneven - if you run your finger along the disc you can feel some grooves (and I don't mean the perforation) Is this normal?

My rear oem discs wear very evenly.

Good to know, I guess mine are probably quite old then.

Do you mean when you run your finger from the inside across the braking surface to the outer edge? Circular grooves all the way around? Not really normal but I have had cars with this before. Mostly cars where they do not specifically say to replace the rotors with the pads so after several sets of pads on the same rotors there will be some unusual patterns.

Best front rotor for the money? Dealership wants $135 per rotor 2034210912. Parts.com has them for $100 but will it be the same quality?

Guys
Dust does not equate to poor brakes, the best pads give off the most amount of dust due to the compounds. As for the grooves in the rotors, you shouldn't see them that quickly, did you turn your rotors? Drilled rotors don't wear evenly.

You can get the cryo treated version of the StopTech cross-drilled/vented rotors from TireRack for less than that - $127 apiece. Only have to pay tax if you're in Indiana, too. If you're looking for pure OEM products, however, I would recommend the Parts.com rotors. Unless otherwise noted, AFAIK, they only sell OEM products.

Btw, OP, I have the exact same rust problem with some Pilenga cross-drilled/vented rotors that were "OEM quality." I brake hard and late rather often, plus I went from 145-0 standing on the petal semi-recently - both front wheels were smoking when I came to a stop - which warped them a tiny bit, but they haven't even lasted 40,000 miles. The Akebono Euro Ceramics I installed with them at the same time aren't even halfway gone; they're just clamping down on rust that is spreading out from the center hub parts of the rotors and squealing/grinding like crazy.

I am not a fan and do not recommend them but I picked up a set of temporary rear brakepads from Autozone. They were cheap but they were also the equivalent of the last set of OEM pads I ran. No, they are not up to the standards of Porterfields but they are worth at least (and probably more) than I paid for them.

Hey I was wondering what type of paint you used to paint the disks... I bought oem ones recently and they don't get dirty there but just curious if I use regular paint for cars.. wont it melt off because the rotors get pretty darn hot?> always was scared of that.. maybe powercoat?? idk

You want a high temperature brake caliper paint. Normal paints will just flake or burn off after a short time. I think formymercedes.com sells it as do most car parts stores.

What colour silver paint did you use for the rotors, that looks nice and neat. Im going to do mine soon and cant decide between black or silver? I don't want to use a silver that is going to look cheap.

Akebono euro is the only pad I'll ever use again. Next to no dust. Literally you can drive 1000 miles and your wheels barely show a light dusting. Never seen brown or black build up and I think I went all winter without a wash.

I just changed my rotors probably had 150k miles on them. They were not even causing any issues I just did a complete brake and rotor swap because they were so old. The tech had to use a saw to take off the bolt lol. The oem ones are great and very cheap for what they are.

About to put the akebonos on my car with some new rotors. Do you guys use any sort of anti-squeel solution on your ceramic pads or do you just put them on dry? My rear pads came with moly brake lube but my fronts didn't?
