C32 AMG, C55 AMG (W203) 2001 - 2007

Dealer replaced valve cover gaskets, now idle issues.

Question Dealer replaced valve cover gaskets, now idle issues.

I had my local dealer replace the valve cover gaskets the other day. Yesterday, my gas cap warning indicator lit up (never seen this in eight years of ownership). Along with that warning, I noticed the car appear to hunt for idle and often cycles from 1800-2200 (up and down).

I found a like condition on the E55 AMG forum and someone mentioned a vacuum leak. The problem is, I can't find it. Car never had this issue unitl after the dealer did the valve gasket replacement.

Any idea? Yeah, I noticed the air breather covers weren't all snug and have since tightened.

I have a M113 V8 and I experienced a similar situation when my valve cover gaskets were replaced. It ended up being the driver side breather hose that went from the driver side valve cover to the maf. It had a big crack that let in a lot of air. These hoses get brittle over time so it's not unusual that they break when disturbed.

I thought I checked that hose, but will double check once the car cools down. Thanks for the reply.

When I did the valve cover gaskets I also replaced all of those breather hoses. It's recommended b/c of what 2MH said, they get brittle and when you pull them off to take the valve covers off they will likely break. Even if they don't, there may be some cracks that you didn't see when you did it (or the dealer did it). I'm assuming they probably didn't replace those hoses for you.

The passenger side breather hose underneath the box had a chuck taken out of it. I used a mirror and flashlight and looks to be at fault. Odd thing is, car ran fine before the valve cover gaskets were replaced. It almost looks like it was crimped.
So, it will run like crap until I can have the dealer fix it (in training all week and can't even get the part and do it myself). I could send the Mrs to the shop, but I rather not.

Did not see anything odd, but cleaned dirty throttle body, and code3 filter...

I also checked all the hoses and all is good. I will test drive this weekend. If I recall, the CEL comes on with the GAS CAP warning, and then low fuel after 30-minutes of driving..
