Time to do the brakes

I'm going in for B service on Monday and I'm anticipating that the brakes will need to be done or done soon after. Have any of you done your brakes yet? Have you used the dealer, someone else, or have you done them yourself? How much have you paid?

After paying for the college educations of my dealers kids with my 98 ML320s many brake jobs, I started doing them myself. I wonder if the C32 is as straightforward?

Brakes are basically the same on any car. Are you changing pads and rotors, or just the pads?

I was thinking of just changing the pads. I figure I should be able to go another set before changing the rotors. I might let the dealer, or a local shop do the rotors when that time comes...

brakes and rotors

i went for my 20,000 mile B service in mb manhattan (41 st and 11th) and my service advisor "recommended" i change my brakes and rotors. brakes i understand but the rotors? i then asked a mechanic walking around in the service area about the rotors and he showed me what to look for. if there is "raised " edge on the rotor then that is the indication. my raised edge was hardly felt when you run your finger through it so i declined the brake and the rotor work. i think my rotors were good for another 20,000 miles. my brakes maybe 5,000 miles. so if you use mb manhattan, i think they are trying to subtly sell more services to increase their revenue. they wanted 250 for the pads and around 400 for the rotors

Ben,

How much does the brembo big brake kit cost?

I might jump for that when I have to change mine. It would go nicely with the Bilstein PSS-9 and wheels I have planned.

Also talking to my technician he told me that the rotors are made to last maybe 5k longer than the pads so if you did a new set of pads and didn't change the rotors your brakes will squeak after about 5k miles depending on usage. But he said it should still grip fairly well but not great.

I am not sure if your brake sensor will go off or not in that case.

I'm using MB of Greenwich. They seem to tell me the real deal. Thanks for the tips. I'll let you know how it goes.

That sounds like a pretty short lifetime for the rotors. I know some of the guys here track their cars and it seems like they've made it further on the rotors. It will be interesting to see what my dealer says. Has anybody here changed the rotors out themselves?

I got my car back from the dealer. I was expecting them to say new pads and possibly rotors. I have 22k miles. I told them not to perform any work outside of warranty without my permission as I plan to at least do the pads myself. To my surprise, they said the pads (front and rear) had at least 50% left.

That's pretty amazing to me as I drive fairly aggressive and I thought for sure all that rapid braking from 150 to 70 was taking its toll on the pads. Also, I got the sense that most folks here didn't get past 20k or so on the pads.

I'll keep an eye on them myself over the next 10k. I still plan to change them myself, although I need to see if the rotors will be as straightforward when the time comes.

They also removed the "No Phone" display, set the octane level to 93, and enabled the large gear display. The only thing they pushed back on was removing the vmax limiter. I got the sense that the mechanic would have been open to it, but since I had it written down on my list, they had to "officially" say no. Till next time on that one...

What is the large gear indicator? Sounds interesting.

Also, im guessing most people are getting shafted into changing pads and rotors early..easy $$ for the stealers.
