At least I'm quite sure as to that. Cuz I have the triangular one and I think I got it because it didn't fit my normal chrome round key

Then what was all of the back and forth about because I keep reading round can be used but triangular cannot? Such confusion over a fob.

Old black fobs can be swapped from one case to another black case. The old black fob chip has been swapped to the round panic button chrome housing fobs but requires you to know how to remove and replace chips from a circuit board. Also this won't work at all with keyless go fobs. The new triangle panic button fob can't have anything internally swapped and this is the only case that can take the AMG back cover.

So, essentially, this is a dealer-only excursion from here on out? Otherwise, how would maverick have one for his C55?

All of this to get my AMG cover on a key that usually lives in my pocket. Just how vain am I?

100% correct.

What is irritating is the usual "I think I read once..." reiteration of bad advice. People who don't have 1st hand experience should NOT retype things they think they read once.

Everything typed by Rocman8 is accurate, and very useful info.

The round and triangle panic button chrome keys look very similar but are of radically different construction. The round panic button one is similar to the original black key with a PCB that slides out and a battery tray that slides out.

The triangle button key is glued together, the battery area is accesed by opening the cover, nothing slides out. The good news is this keeps the PCB drier and less prone to outside intrusion. The bad side is it removes possibility of fixes later on.

And it has caused this level of confusion.

Sooo, since the AMG backing only fits the triangular panic button equipped fobs and those can only be programmed by the dealer, I have no choice at this point but to call dealers now, right?

If you already have chrome key but with round panic button:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/2pcs-AMG-dec...1WAIfX&vxp=mtr

Won't fit on black plastic

If you only have 1 key, may as well go to dealer and get a 2nd

Ya man that stinks. I remember going through the same confusion when I did my swap. Originally bought the backing only to learn it doesn't fit on the round panic fob. Had to go buy a new one at the dealer. I was pissed but I also really wanted the backing and had spent about double you did on it so I was waist deep at that point. Sorry I didn't realize when setting you on this path which key you originally had.

Another thing to throw out there is that nobody including dealers can reprogram a used remote to your vehicle.

So when I go to the dealer and get a triangular panic buttoned fob and get it reprogrammed, does my other spare still work? The key is programmed to the car, not vice versa, correct?

As long as they don't connect SDS to the car to "replace" a lost key, should be fine.

And that's a scenario that should only play out if a car comes in with it's proper paperwork but no keys at all, so I'm good. I just want an updated fob to put this damn badge on.

Well, this has been quite the learning experience.

I appreciate your sacrifice in preventing me from doing the same thing. I just bought the plain old black one.

So far I'm only out $16.10 and the guy said he'd refund, but nothing yet. The $27.00 I paid for the AMG backing is making me follow this through. It came today and is indeed OEM. Calling the dealer Monday about a new fob for it.

The seller of the useless fob has basically told me to pound sand. He's supposedly sold dozens of these and I'm the first to complain. For $16.10 I may just screw with his 100% positive feedback and call it done.

He probably hasn't gotten complaints cuz he's sold them to people in foreign countries or they just don't care cuz it's $16. Unfortunately a new key from the dealer is over $100 if not $200 depending on dealer and location. Either way good luck man. Next you just need to add the midcity remote starter to go with your new fancy triangle panic button (since that's how you activate the remote function). Lol
