C32 Tire Eater....

I'm on my 3 set of Pirelli rears.... the rears always wear down in the middle first.... leaving plenty of tread on the edges.... but once the middle is gone, so is the traction... I've been running 30psi and check the pressures every 2 weeks..

is anyone else getting this kind of wear in the middle? do the Pilot sports do this also?

any other tire recommendations?

Doesnt middle tire wearout depend on too high tirepressure?

The pirellis on my 3200 is down to about 50% after 1000km on road. And not as much as 50% of the km is "fun" driving, so I guess you should count on changing tires every 1000-1500km if you drive your C32 hard

The Pilot Sports I had did not have a problem with wear in the middle. I ran 33psi in the rears at all times and did burn outs daily for the 14000 miles it took to wear them to the wear indicators. They wore evenly.

Since switched to Toyo's which have more grip, not sure how they will wear.

Might want to check your pressure gauge if you have not already because it does sound like you are running too much air.

Rossos=fast wear and poor traction

I just swapped out my rear Rossos for Toyos after noticing the same problem (heavy wear in the middle of the tire and poor traction). What a difference! The tire change literally knocked six tenths of a second off of my quarter mile time. Accelerating with the Rossos was like being on ice. The Toyos grip really well from launch. They are also as quiet, comfortable, and light as the Rossos. I still have my Rossos on the front, and they show little evidence of wear. I don't know what it is, but rear Rossos wear very quickly. Not just on the C32, either. If you read comments of Porsche, BMW, etc. owners on Epinions or CarReview, many make the same negative comments about the Pirellis (fast rear wear).

If you like to accelerate hard, the Rossos are probably the worst tire you could put on the rear of the C32. Dink had the same problem with his Neros. I can't speak for the PS2s, other than to say that they seem overpriced. The Toyos at Edgeracing.com are a steal.

I agree with Zeppelin; Replace your tire pressure gauge. I had the same problem...when i took it to the dealer, and compared guages, I was over pressurizing by 4 psi; a lot if you're running other than stock size/ width.

it's not the tire gauge, I have two of them, one of them is new.... no pressure issues with my other cars....

I might try out the pilot sports this time....

Are you running on stock wheels? If not, what are you using?

Problem is the Pirellis. There is no other explanation. Your pressure is fine. Your driving is not psycho. The problem is the Pirellis on the rear of your C32. Don't take my word, search general internet ratings on the Rossos and Neros. Everyone says the same. . . Pirellis are quiet, smooth, and laterally grip well. However, in terms of drive wheel longevity, they suck!

As much as I would love to love Pirellis (they are quiet, smooth, good lateral grip) they have a glaring defect. . . horrific tread life when exposed to significant linear acceleration forces. They are also the absolute worst at the drag strip.

Pirelli tread life

I agree that Pirelli (esp. Rosso & Pzero) on the drive wheels wears very fast. I had that problem with the Rosso's on my c32 and with the Pzero's on my 996TT. I went through a rear set on the turbo in about 8000 miles and that's an AWD car, albiet rear-favored AWD.

thanks for the comments and info...

I think I'll put on a pair of Pilot Sports for the rears... my front Pirelli's are fine.... hope mixing em doesn't have too much of an ill effect.... if so, I'll just do the fronts later....

im looking on tire rack....

they have:

Michelin Pilot Sport PS2 (Max Performance Summer)

and

Michelin Pilot Sport (Max Performance Summer)

PS2 = pilot sport 2...it's hella a lot more expensive more than the already expensive pilot sport.

I'd go with the pilot sport 1. like others have said, the pirelli tires has tendancy to wear faster in the middle for rwd drive cars.

pilot sport on the other hand should be ok. my original set lasted for 22k miles till the middle part are completely bold on both rear.

tire rack has the PS2's on special..... for less than the Pilot Sport 1's....

the tread design doesn't look as cool as the PS1's, but if they're better for less money, I'll go with them....
