Unhappy C32 AMG runs bad/not at all. High emissions.

C32 AMG 2002

Bought the car in september 2017
Everything was fine. It ran like it should, no problems.

Last week i went for the yearly car inspection (Sweden)
Failed on the emissions test.

Results (Limit)
CO@2500rpm = 1.5 (0.2)
Lambda = 0,93 (0,97-1,03)

The results indicates that it gets to much fuel, unburnt fuel?
They also do an OBDII scan at the inspection, No codes found. (They are using a simple scanner, nothing fancy)

After the inspection the car ran really bad, for some reason.
I could drive with very little throttle applied.
As soon as i gave it some more throttle it started to run bad, and if i gave it to much throttle it just died. (Feels like it misfires)
And then i could start it again, and so on.
But after a while it died. And now it won't start at all.

Before all this i drove it for like 120km and everything was fine.

What is done to the car (By previous owner/owners):
1. The cats in front (Primary?) is removed.
2. Rear o2 sensors mounted on L-shaped extensions
3. SL55 intake
4. Tuned, can't confirm it. But that is what they said.

Done to the car by me:
1. All (4 of them) o2 sensors replaced with new Bosch ones.
2. Oil/filter change, engine and gearbox
3. New sparkplugs
4. New K&N airfilters
5. New SC bearing and belt
6. New battery

Sparkplugs and o2 sensors replaced after it started to run bad. but it didn't make any difference.

I've ordered a new CPS (Crankshaft Position Sensor), because some of the symptoms is similare. Except no engine light.

The problems/symptoms are:

1. Failed emissions test (Read at top)
2. The exhaust gases has a really strong funky smell.
3. Maybe a little rough/low rpm when idleing (looks like 600rpm), can feel the car shaking a bit.
4. High fuel consumption, like 25L/100km (9mpg) when driving at 70km/h
5. When it runs i can rev it to 4-5000rpm without problems when in park. But as soon as i start to drive, it runs rough, hesitates, misfires when to much throttle is applied.
6. If i give it to much throttle when in drive it just dies.
7. Now it won't start at all. it cranks as it should, tries to start sometimes. And sometimes if i let of the key it continue to crank for a couple of seconds.

As i have been reading on forums, there seems to be alot of things that can be the problem.

Has anyone here experienced similar or the same problems?

It is hard to explain in english..

I experienced rough driving before. I fixed it by replacing the coils for the misifiring cylinders. since you've replaced the plugs, it could be the coils or the plug wires. Do you know which cylinders are misfiring? This might be the most likely cause but then it could also be the plugs you used.

No i don't know anything yet
I need to check for error codes. But can't do that today.
How good are these cars on showing specific codes?

No engine light or malfunction shown in the instrument cluster.

Maybe you should start by cleaning the fuel injectors first or maybe do a fresh new oil change if you haven't done so. Cleaning the fuel injectors always perks up the engine afterwards and makes it run and sound like new.

The oil is not old. Maybe 300km of driving.
I've ordered 6 new bosch injectors (0 280 156 304) and the crankshaft position sensor.
Should have them by the end of the week.

what about the secondary CATS? They could be melted. Also high emissions could also be due to no primary CATS?

Yes if you can buy some electronics cleaner and try to get any gunk out. You can get a good amount of info from the car with a standard obd2. I've fixed any problems with the car with a regular obd. The only time I had to get in depth with a superior scanner was to figure out if my conductor plate was bad.

Let me know if you want some help sourcing cheap parts. I can help look up parts and hopefully theyre willing to ship internationally. I usually use ebay but sometimes branch out to RMEuropean/autohausaz/pelicanparts/ etc so I dont know if they sell internationally.

Do this after youve fixed the rough idling/driving. Its not likely this is the cause but if youve done everything then fuel injectors could be it.

any updates mate? Would love to hear more of your situation. We all want to help you sort out your 32 instead of getting frustrated and parting it out.

Updates at the moment.

Checked fault codes with iCarsoft MB II scanner.
No codes found on the ECM
One code found on TSM i think its called. (P2000) something about Torque value.

Only other thing i found with the scanner is that my left rear (downstream) o2 sensor is stuck at about 453-458mV.
Nothing wrong with the sensor i think. Because it shows the same values when i switch cables on the left and right rear sensors.
Maybe something with the cable from the ECM to the sensor. Or the connector itself (it looks fine tough)

Yesterday i got it to run good for a while. Maybe 10 minutes.
Did not do anything to it. just started it a few times.
Start attempt 1, 2 ,3 ,4... Runs bad/not at all.
Start attempt X.. it starts and runs good. Drives it 10 min. Everything seems fine.
Shuts it off. 15min later when i start it, it runs bad again...

I have a bad video how it runs, about 2000-3000rpm.

Hmmmm....you say sometimes it runs fine but then it consistently runs poorly. It really could be the coils. But it could also be the plugs (doubt it since you replaced all of them), wires, fuel injectors. It sounds like a misfire to me. maybe the fuel system? fuel filter or fuel pump? I find it odd that there are no codes being given. Have you tried a STAR reader or maybe like a dealer type obd? With a obd like that you could test the systems individually in real time and see what is not functioning

I came across these threads. Maybe it could be of some value to you .

http://www.benzworld.org/forums/w203...laying-up.html
It could be a simple fix for you if its not giving codes. These cars aren't very prone to catastrophic failure imo.

My bet is your cams went bad, common problem with that year. Cam lobes are pressed on and over time they can shift.
Happened to me. Blew a head gasket, took it apart, found out the cam lobes had moved.

Good idea and hopefully not the case. I didn't even pay attention to the year. 02 is not the ideal year to get when buying a 32

Hum does not sound fun at all..
But it should run bad all the time if the cams are bad?

Anyway i'm leaving it to a mechanic on monday.

Update time:

The car is alive and running.

New fuel pump solved the problem!
About 350km since the pump was replaced. And no problems at all, so far.
Runs really smooth. Pulls like it should (Hard) , idle is constant, no misfireing, nothing!
