Ticking Sound

I've been experiencing ticking sound coming from the transmission tunnel when the car is hot. Especially when driving off after a short stop around 5-15min.

Anyone had experienced this before? Thks

tickling sound was from the purge valves in the engine bay for me. they replaced it/reroute it.

this is the first time i heard about something like your situation.

I know with my C230 that was one of the tech bulletins, a ticking sound in the tranny tunnel. I think they actually have the same tranny so its probably a common thing.

I have the same problem now too! Its sounds like its coming from under the center console. If i'm dring around 20-30 mph and let off the gas, you hear this ticking sound. It is definitly drivetrain related. As you speed up, the ticking does too until the road noise covers it all up.

I took it to MB manhattan twice, they couldnt replicate it. The third time, I took a tech out to reproduce it. He took off the boot and trim and it was very loud and very clear.

They have it now and will let you know what they found.

Is it a constant sound? Could it be supercharger related?

The sound that you hear is the heat shielding rubbing against the drive shaft. It usually only happens when the engine heats up and things expand. It sounds like playing cards in bicycle spokes, and is dependent on vehicle speed, not engine speed.

It is a simple repair as long as you tell your mechanic exactly what to do (remove the protective cover underneath the engine just forward of the cats and push the heat shielding away from moving parts).

DO NOT just walk into MBZ and complain of a ticking noise. If you don't give them a detailed roadmap of how find their behinds, you will end up with:

1. The mechanic looking at you like you are a freaking nutcase, and no repair performed, or

2. Replacement of 19 parts which had nothing to do with the problem.

Hope this helps.

Thanks Vomit (Aside from you s/n, I thought I would never say that)

I thought I read a post like that somewhere and thats what I've been telling my SA verbatim. The 2nd time it was in, they pulled the exhaust and heat shield and reinstalled it. Maybe they didnt go far ehough up front?

I just called my SA since the car is in the shop and he'll tell the tech.

As a side note, while my car was up the tech was spinning the wheels, hoping to hear the noise, and he told me my drivers side rear bearing was noisy. I think they're going to relace it. My C32 only has 4000 miles on it, does that seem odd?

anyway, thanks again

I had the problem solved at my local dealer. I was trying very hard to explain the noise to the service advisor and he said he knows the problem. (He didn't even go for a test drive) It is the heat shield above the propeller shaft touching the propeller shaft.

That noise irritated the hell out of me and I thought it was a tranny problem too initially. Thank god it's solved after a minor fix.

Finally fixed and then some!

Although I've told them about the heat shield before, I called my SA again to remind him. He told me they were working through every little noise they could find and would also check the heat shield.

When I picked up the car I went over the repair order with my SA. In the process of locating this ticking noise, they managed to find other things that were making louder than normal or unusal "sounds". There ended up being 2 full pages of things removed and replaced. Sure enough, the very last item was the heat shield (They even replaced the purge valve because they thought it was too loud)

When driving the car home, I noticed how everything about the drive was quieter. And yes, the ticking is finally gone!

That ticking sound was so annoying that I hated driving my car...now I can say I am very, very happy

Glad you got it fixed. I'm still driving around with the noise, as I have not had time to take the car in. I have convinced myself that the noise is actually coming from my brain, and not my car. That way, I am constantly reminded that I am still thinking.

Thanks guys, my car started making this sound today and I knew I'd read the cause here somewhere, I'll add it to the list for when my car goes in.

I think a disgruntled assembly werker planted gps controlled bombs in the trannies and MB is trying to keep it hush hush by calling it a "routine technical service bulletin"

My car had the same problem. I brought it into Smythe in San Jose and first time was a temporary fix that didn't work but the second time I brought it in, the replaced the entire evaporator purge valve and the noise is now gone.

I think we are talking about two different sounds....I can see no way that the ticking sound coming from mine and some of the other owners vehicles that posted, being that the sound is speed intensified and with all accessories off, is caused from the evaporator purge valve.
