Warming Up Your Car

Do you warm up your car before you drive? There are times when my car will sit in the garage for a couple of days (drive another commuter car to work for now) and I will let it warm up for a few minutes before driving off. But since it's new, do I really need to do this? Just curious.

Thanks,
Nick

I don't really think it is nesessary to let it idle for a while before you drive. I just drive slowly (less than 2500rpm) until it reaches working temp (about 80c).

Seems to be the best way to keep the wear and tear to a minimum.

I ALWAYS do....and allow it to hit above 80c before I drive off (about 5 mins time)....warm up your car before operating like you warm up your body before working out....

BlackC230Coupe,, you floor it on a cold start?!?!??! that's like getting to the gym and the first thing you do is get on the flat bench and try to throw up your max weight on the first set!!! :p

does anyone notice that thier car feels like it is in a lower gear or that it has a little more 'pep' for the first couple minutes of driving after a cold start?

I do the same thing as frank with my W210. Start it and once the RPM's drop from 1500PRM or cold start to normal idle, I drive off.

i don't let it idle too long but a little bit and drive it very very slow for the 1st 20 mins generally. my temperature shows about 90-degrees maybe a little higher when it settles. is this normal or too high? it is definitely over 80...i am slightly worried but it doesn't seem affected. maybe this is normal, but i thought it used to see it maybe a little bit closer to 80?

My temp. is consistently just a hair above 80 degrees while driving. When I'm really on the gas I saw it at 85 but never 90. That might not mean that 90 is high, so I dunno about that.

I think I'm going to take FrankW's suggestion for warming up. Letting it drop to idle before I take off from a cold start. There is definitely a difference in the sound of the engine and this usually takes only about 1 minute.

Nick

It takes 5-8 minutes to drive in the traffic i.e. from my car park to the highway entrance. Would that mean it is enough warm up already? Can I floor it after 8 minutes. Consider our ouside temperature is 22-26c now.

Is it normal that my C55 engne (warm) idle rpm is only 500?

Please advise

Trough city traffic I'd wait about 20 mins to have it warmed up. On the freeway though.. doesnt take as long.. probably 10-15 mins I guess

Letting the RPM drop then drive off is the correct thing to do. When the RPM drops on cold starts, it means that the car computer has switched from closed loop to open loop system. While in closed loop scenario, the engine enforces excess fuel for quicker warming up and to avoid stalling.

Thanks,

even if you leave it on for couple of minutes, the engine gets warm,,,

BUT the transmission is still cold, so the best way is to drive very slowly for a few minutes.... then nail it and get the shoit out of it dude

my 0.2 cents
