Should I go for E55 after one year ?

With so much fun, pride and status symbol being the owner of C AMG , I guess I would keep my car for 4 years. Assuming I am crazy, say one year would be about right to get enough fun from my C55 as well as I can by then sell it as the best resell value in the market. ( here locally , new C55 costs 108K , 1 year old resell value is ~80K ). I am thinking if E55 is the right upgrade?
Now, after 10 months from now,
1. will there be a E class facelift ?
2. will the E55 AMG engine or the transmission be changed to Turbo and 7G Tranny respectively after one year ?

Well, I don't think there will be a facelift to the E class anytime soon considering it just got one in 03. However, a engine upgrade I've heard might turn up in 06, but more likely in 07. Something like a turbo charged 6.3L V8 with like 560HP.

Funny topic, just did almost the exact same thing. I purchased a used 03 E55 AMG and traded in my 04 C32 AMG. The E55 has 10k miles and the C32 had 7k miles.

I thought I would keep the 32 for at least 2 years, but it lasted all of 7 months! Not because I disliked the 32, but because after I test drove the 55, it was all over! I really liked the size of the 32, but the 55 just takes the cake (and it should for the extra $$$).

I think the next step up for any C32 or C55 owner would be the E55, no question. The S55 would be too large for me so I don't have anywhere else to go now. I'm still a single guy so going to an SL55 in a few years wouldn't be out of the question.

Cool. Beside E55 price it is a fortune here , the size of C is something I am hestitating to give up. Especially going down slope, I wonder if E55 still maintain C55's "crawling feeling" (best grip a car on straight road at high speed I ever drove )?

Don't forget about the E65 coming soon! I really hope to get an E55/65 some day too but I want to get one before they make a major facelift to it.

Since they changed it '03, how many years until they change it again? Is it 7 years like other car companies?

Nick

PS I don't like the new MB look that is coming out.

Why I chose the C55 over the E55....
The C55 isn't as fast as the E55, but it's fast enough. I don't have any complaints when it comes to overtaking, quickly getting up to speed while merging, or outaccelerating 99.9% of the cars on the road. The E55 does 0-60 in 4.2 seconds (about .5 sec quicker than a C55), but the fun ends there. It accelerates like a Jet, Period. It has too many electronics intervening, thus isolating the driver from the road. Also, the thing weighs 4000+lbs, so it's not much fun when your straight highway turns to curves. I remember back when the BMW 7-series weighed less than 4000 lbs.. I can take that C55 and confidently toss that thing in the corners without a problem... To me, life begins when you see the curved arrow up ahead... I wanted something in-between the raw edged M3 and the luxurious boat-like E55.. The E55 definitely isn't the true enthusiasts choice... It's for comfortably getting 5 people to the airport in a hurry.. Sorry, I wasn't impressed and neither was Car & Driver..

I will have to agree with Ekaru on this one. Although the E55 can simulate a shuttle launch that is the highlight of the show. I wouldn't go as far as to say its a one trick pony because it does handle verywell for its size but its not really that sporty. You can't really throw it around. Even the C55 isn't all that nimble. If I were to go after an ubersuper sedan I would try to lay hands on the new M5. I do need to have room for five, but the fact is when I'm toting people around I'm usually on pretty good behavior. If I had to ball my sedan and sports car needs into one unit, I would be calling the hooligans at M for my tuetonic driving fix. I suspect in either case it will be a wallet flatening experience.

I agree the C55 is definitly closer to a sports car then the E55. However the new M5 looks like the beast to own, the only thing that miffs me is the lack of torque, I just read one of the better Eurp mags review and while it has %00+ hp the torque is very low ratio wise. The Torque is what makes the C55 such a beast, hey 05C55 any regrets not getting the 997s? Somedays I miss the 996 however after seeing one of my neighbors without his headlights (happend to me 2x) I woke up!

I saw one at the auto show and I told my wife "thats what I traded for my C55", I looked fondly and moved on. One thing about the Porsche is you cannot really appreciate it at lower speeds, except the engine note which is worth 10K alone, and when it comes into its element you're looking at a felony. You could argue the same about the C55 but the C55's manners at legal speeds is something I can live with everyday. I really felt like I might get into trouble running the 997S around town and its all I can do to keep my foot out of the C. I will always love the Porsche marque and there will come a day when I'll have a new 911 in the garage, I always said I would, but for now I'm very happy with the C55. I'll post pics of my christmas present so you can see what I'm going to use to keep my testosterone levels up and adrenal glands in shape.

Eric,

Very good points.

I never had a chance to test drive C55 nor E55 before I made up my buying decision. If I were financially capable ( E55 is 165K here ), I probably would have got the E55 before the birth of C55. In that case , I would never know what is a C55 and how wonderful it is in roads handling in most situations

Now, when I look back, I am really 'lucky'. Because we don't have super highways here and considering we pay USD1.6 per litre fuel, the traffc jam would make the monster engine of E55 very 'expensive' to operate as a day to day transport.

Yes, the C55 'crawling feeling' is something very unique for its high torque and perfect body balance. I like the word "crawling' because that is exactly what the C55 does when go in straight or downhill in higher speeds. ( A kind of feeling that I rememeber once friend of mine told me his feeling with his Nissan 300ZX Twin trubo )

For our case here in HK, there will even have to have a lot of sense to give up a C55 for a E55. This is why I have to be very assertive and to find out when is the 'right time' , one year or 4 years....etc

When time comes, there is at least one good reason to own a E55 because of the audience.

My feelings are the same my 996 in addition too the 2 headlight thefts, I had 6 tickets in the last year, the C55 is much more of a sleeper. I am really enjoying it. Maybe a 997s end of next year or if not I will actually try maybe a Range Rover or X5.

I owned a C32, test drove a C55 and own an E55. The C32 was a great car and the test drive was great in the C55, but it just didn't do it for me. The E55 has massive power, a huge amount of luxury, and handles good enough in order to take corners easily (espically with the Drive-Dynamic Seats ).

I love the E55 and wouldn't ever consider going back to the C-Class AMG ever again.

The E55 is a fantastic machine, don't get me wrong... If you the love major thrust, hedonistic accommodations, more generous rear seat room, and prestige, then the E55 is for you.... The only complaint I had was the handling... The Audi RS6 is more confidence inspiring... It weighs a tad more, but feels like it weighs significantly less than the E55. That's the sign of a truly well engineered car. The R-technology cars unfortunately aren't cheap.. $85K for a high performance mid-range Audi?

Thanks. That's another very valid point and that's why I have to sort out the mind as 'buy it for what' to come up a final decision to spend my retirement fund

C55 is never made to take the place of E55. Any E/S class owners surely love the luxury and these nice cars no doubt deserve an AMG engine to be invested on. That is quite a different perspective as which is the best car to do a corner. Or we can end up to buy a Honda Civic instead :p

BTW, what is the gas milege difference of the two cars?

I just test drove one AGAIN...
O5..loaded E55...Dark Silver....85K 35miles on it..
Anyway it's very fast...thats all I can say I really like about it.
It still feels like a boat to me.
I like the Audi RS6 alot better..
I would never stoop to an Audi again but..
At the end of the day..
I love my C class.

I only know that 'boat' feeling enough from my W210. Guess it is not that bad with the E55 AMG suspension. I love the C55 the way when it is 'crawling quietly' like a tiger running to her food. I love that torque which allows me to pass quietly by most of the other cars at only 4th gear !
