I also much prefer the OEM grill - more subtle and the dual stars clash with each other. I also would suggest removing the front plate - it completely destroys the clean lines of the hood and spoiler facia.

What does the front end of the CLK55 have (dual stars or ...)? If the nose is the same, wouldn't the flat emblem and front grill work anyway, or is the hood different? ... anybody?

Every Mercedes with a star grill has a flat hood emblem.

Is it always the same MB star emblem or some other type (e.g. AMG)?

Then I would say that they are too ostentatious for me - whatever the model. If I would have wanted a CLK I would have bought a CLK. Before I even drove my new C55 out of the dealership I changed the big star to the flat hood emblem. The last thing that I would have wanted was a even bigger star shouting at everyone and anyone that looked at my car. I much prefer the more subdued look of the flat hood emblem with the OEM grill. If I did anything with my grill it would be to change the chrome look to possibly gray or black, where the chrome is.

They all use the same flat star. They don't use any AMG star from the factory.

How did you do this at the dealership? Did they supply you with some silicone to stick it on? If I understand from other posts, the C55 hood does not allow attaching the flat emblem in the same way as the CLK. Correct me if I am wrong, because I would like to use a flat emblem but hate the idea of having to stick it down. [Another possible complication is that I have the 3M paint protection and not sure how that might (or might not) interfere.]

I guess to each to their own, I knew I wanted to do the CLK grill conversion before I even got the car. As for the front plate, yeah, I wish I could remove it as well, but here in NY its mandatory.

The flat star is a 2 minute job. It does not stick on. You dont need silicone. You just pop the hood, unscrew a bolt, and the old star comes off. Put the new flat star on and just tighten the bolt and your all set. All the cars have the star on the hood attached the same way. your 3M film will not be in the way at all.

Thanks for the info and ... sorry to doubt ... but could you explain then why the dealer told me there would be problems fitting it on my C55 and also why people buying it aftermarket must use silicone to get it to adhere properly?

It does not need to adhere, it just uses the bolt to hold it on. The dealer does not know what there talking about because they dont have much experience with actually changing a part that did not come stock on the car. I and many other people here can assure you, no silicone is needed. I think if you were to get one, you would be very surprised how easy it really is.

When the flat hood emblem is secured to a W203, the pressure exerted and contact between the underside of the bare emblem and the paint surface will cause scratching of the paint around the circumference of the indent. It is for this reason some installers choose to use silicon or double stick tape to prevent such friction and resultant blemish when the flat emblem is removed and the original star put back in place.

I think that you are getting some bad information. I ordered it before I received the car because I liked the way it looked. When I picked up the car the service tech took it and installed it in a few minutes. No muss, no fuss. And I know that it is not "stuck" on the car. It attached with bolts and nuts the same way as the star. As for the finish of the car, I cannot comment on that but I will never remove the flat emblem.

So, do you mean that the flat hood emblem is a slightly larger diameter than the original raised star and does not fit into the depression precisely the same way (possibly leaving marks when it is tightened down and later removed)?

I'll need to look at my 3M paint protection install more carefully to see if they removed the raised star before applying the film. If the film is actually under the star (what I hope), then when I tighten the new emblem, marking of the painted surface would be a non-issue.

Does it use the same h/w or does that come with the new emblem? Did you order the flat emblem from the dealer and what did they charge you?

Rgds,
Norm

Go white cars!

The flat hood emblem (at least mine) has a larger diameter than the star, therefore this is probably why people have concerns about the hood emblem rubbing on the hood, since it actually touches it
