DON'T DO IT MAN!! I have several car enthusiast friends who have have gone through a frugal phase (for no apparent reason) and taken a step down to something cheaper.. Each and everyone of them ended up regretting it and went back to the class vehicle they were driving before... THEN they regretted it even more when they realized how much their car switching escapade ended up costing them... ALL this because of a frugal phase or impulsive mind..... Trust me man.. There's a 99.99% chance that you'll miss what it was like cruising in that C55 when you're tooling around in that Mini... again... DON'T DO IT!

Completely different cars for different reasons, and there is no need to start a war here, but... I was on the waiting list for a MINI S for four months when I got impatient, walked onto a MB dealer lot and drove home in a C32 the same day, a mistake I continue to regret. The MINI is more fun in every respect and situation in the daily commute. Granted, it is not the car you want to drive for long journeys on the freeway, but for the short distances in traffic and the occational hillside joy ride and track day, it is tough to beat. I borrowed a MINI S for the day and my C32 could not shake the little Cooper in a canyon run. And when I took it to the track, it bit most of the participants right in the bumper! There is not much else out there that will put a smile on your face through every gear change like a MINI Cooper S with the "WORKS". And there are many performance additions available. For a daily driver, under 10,000 miles a year, I would take the MINI S over the M3 and S4 as well. I guess I would take a Lotus Elise over the MINI though

I am sure you have a reason to do so, as many here already made points which I was going to make; I would say, unless you like to be in a mini, or else get a 120i with manual transmission ( I know 120i will not be on sale in USA, so you need to import it by yourself or local dealer )
I heard some mini owners did have encounter of lot of problems with their cars. But that's I have no further information to prove it. Of course , a less 'reliable' car does not mean it is not THE CAR. Besides, who says C55 is reliable
This stupid thought about getting a lower end model to replace the C55 did once flash into my mind; my reason is not because I want something handles better ; it is that the C55 suspension truely stiff , which are really not for bumpy roads in H.K. where I live. I thought about a CLS 500 which is now a fashion to own it; but that means I am changing my C55 to a slightly lower performance car but paying 50% more to replace. That , I am not ready.
We can get stocked brilliant Japanese . Italian sports cars here , and there are plenty of choices; but the final thing comes to myself being too proud to be a MB C55 owner and I have to take that MB star logo away from my mind before I move to some "cheap solutions".
So re-consider the brand , and that is why we are all here.

too many to list
Just the fact that the status you have driving a C55 would not remotely be the same when you would be driving a mini, my 16 year old cousin bought a mini. What is wrong with you bro?

Mini S is a cool car, i know some people with moded S's that are pretty fun cars. But even though it may be more nimble then a C55, i would never consider it to replace it. Maybe as a 2nd would be good. What about the porsches, i remember u used to have one. What about a new 997 so u can have the fun of a manual?
Either way, goodluck!

100% Agreed.
It takes a while for all of us be 'be here' being honable ( at least majority of the world agrees ) MB owners; it ain't easy for me to shift to a Civic back where I was started (actually my second car is a 325i already ) . No matter how reality tells me a Civic is doing the same job and 1000% cheaper to run ; we would not be here at all then.
A mini is a cry of the century, I have no idea what kind of personalities would want to go with a mini instead of a C55 ? On the contrary, I would think many mini owners were considering C55 their dream car !
I once thought about get a Mini S for my wife since she seemed to love it. But the fact is we cannot fall back ; she owns a Z3 and no way she is getting sometime cheaper. I expect her next car is at least a 2005 BMW 4 series convertible or even a Boxter coupe if ever that fortune comes by.
One thing for sure, if a mini passes by, the people will look at the car but not the driver; but if you drive a decent MB, the people will look at who is the driver. Before someone replace C55 to a Mini, do prepare some sort of mentally inferior issues.
A pretty interesting subject regardless whether the idea is naive or not.

To all thanks for all the great replys, a Mini is the car I just happen to like status has nothing to do with the car I drive I have had more nice cars then I care to count but I am just tired and want something inexpensive and fun, The Elise is not an everday car it is really a great track car. The car does not make who we are some people are caught up in that I have nothing to prove There is a guy I know over on 6 speed that just sold his Turbo Cay and his heavily modded TT coupe to simplify and get 1 car many people are doing this these days, as well another 6 speeder who sold his Turbo Cay and GT3 for Lexus SUV. We get sick of people messing with our cars my 996 had the headlights stolen 2x attracted Cops like an MF. The C55 does not draw that kind of attention but it is still a car that people stare at as it is an awesome car overall. I am not selling it it is staying in the family as my Boss is taking the car for his wife.

Good to hear that
I must admit my ex-W210 draws more attention than my silver C55.
C class is not great when we want to "draw attention".
I got more attentions when I drive my wife's Z3 and her ex- MR-S (stolen).
My first experience of "attention" was great, these two guys saw I started my car in a public car park; one of them walked over to my window and asked." is this the 55?" ; and I replied "yes, it is". And, he said, " is it fast?"; I replied," very fast!".
So I guess....C55 does draw attentions from the MB fans but not the pedestrians. I am sure we all experienced that many of those M3's , 911's on the road chasing us....!
I really thought about replace the C55 with 997, and then the 977 is a fortune here; and for that 'slight' performance improvement; I would think I am more happier to keep driving my C55 and still see the nice money in my bank account.
Cheers

It is hard to match the price of the Mini-CooperS 0-60 in 7.0sec (about $20K) but if price isn't the determining factor, why not try...
BMW Z4 ($33K 2.5i 0-60 in 6.7sec or $40K 3.0i 0-60 in 5.4sec)
Honda S2000 ($33K 0-60 in 5.5sec and I hear is a really fun car to drive)
or hell, even closer to the price of the Mini C is the Nissan 350Z @ $26K 0-60 in 5.4sec. And this car gets you better looks than a Mini ever could, for only 6K more.
Either way the choice is yours but if it were me...I'd of course stick with the C55!
