all things compared, imo, it pretty much boils down to whether or not u want a handbuilt & messaged but rumpity-idled i6 or a throatier, smoother, more powerful but more common v8... once u have that decided, all the other stuff is minor.

Go for the C43. The newer body, dashboard, V8 etc. I drove both and I felt in love with the V8.

C43 all the way! Plus you can swap in a 5.5L as a future upgrade unless you want to turbocharge the c36.Mucho dinero!.

you can swap the 5.5l engine into any w202, you end up changing the wireing harness and all that stuff anyway, and all the w202's are the same size so it wouldn't matter....

the v8 can also be tuned a lot easier, as supposed to the c36 which is pretty much tuned to perfection, lots of engine mods for the v8, which makes it very nice....

You think it's that easy to put the 5.5L motor in a non V8 C class? It's been done but it's a lot more challenging than you think. The drive train, harness,Tranny ECU,engine contol ECU ,driveshaft, exhaust system and diferentials are different.Have you done it? Obviously not because the 98 C43 and the 99-2001 E55 use the same harness so I didnt have to do anything else but swap the motor.

well if the engine is going to be swaped its a given the new tranny will be needed as well as harness and all the ecu stuff, its a complete change, and I believe cats and back could be kept the same, but I'm not sure, if you had around 20-22k it could be done easily... plus about 6k for tranny

Donnie would'nt even bother putting a V8 in a non V8 car unless you have "mucho payola"!It's just not a common thing done compared to turbocharging.

Not worth it.Too much $$$ and a waste of time.Engine and tranny alone could run you easily over 15k combimed.Exhaust unless the car had a 4.3L motor is totally different.

Hey! Where are you gonna get the ECU and EFI harness from?

the wheel supply would do it for half of what donnie would do it for, and they have brabus guys so you know its done right, they have done a few conversions, they did the chromeing of the c240 with the 43 engine in it.... and all the trannys were the same on the w202, rated to 330 the more I think about it, not sure if u need to change it...

How much does Donnie charge?Where did you get your info from? Who told you that all the tranny's on the W202's are the same? You need to stop giving misinformation.Your car for example has a totally different transmission than mine. You feel that the C180,220,280,36 have the same trannies as a C43? Do your research man b4 you post this kind of info. You are truly misinformed.

well then if you are so much more well informed than let us know much just donnie charged... I woud suppose it was much more than 20k especially if you are talking about the white w202, I am guessing he charged upwards of 50k for that job, parts alone would be around 20k, and if you could turbo charge a c280 to almost 300 hps, I am sure that 30 more hp which is what the e55 engine was rated at would not kill the tranny, so it would be safe to assume it would be fine, at any rate a 2k c280 tranny and a 2k 43 tranny could not be that much different, I'm sure since you paid some stupid amount of money to get 30 extra hp you would be an expert at all of this information so please by all means fill in the gaps.... you seem to know everything

The trannies are different man!Entirely!Totally different bellhousing and internals.HP on the 5.5L motor is 349-367hp. More than 30hp.And nope, altogether I spent less than 7k.That's not alot of money to me for this imop. The car is also like nite and day.

If I were to do the swap, I would not consider anything but a C43 to start with. Why make life more difficult? never mind the brake set up, gauges, + all the other C43 upgrades. IMOP. (I have a 1999 C43 )

A lot of information about these two great cars. Strange that I thought C43 is pretty hard to find , I thought you should find the cars first and then to decide whether you will take a C43 or a C36. Provided the cars you have found are both good condition and price. If I were to look for a nice vintage MB, I would get a C43 for sure.
