Another Big Brake question

I searched for a similar question, but I could not find anything.

I am thinking to switch to a big brake kit since my rotors are on their final leg. I was thinking to get a kit from Stoptech. I have heard good things from them and like their prices.

Question:

1. What can the stock C43 17" rims clear?
- I think the stock ATEs are 13" rotors. There are two options for the C43:
- 332 mm (13") or 355 mm (14")

2. If the bigger rotor can fit, will there be any problem having such a large bias between the front and back brakes?

Thanks as always!

This is coming from no experience as a mechanic, but I wouldn't think there would be a problem with the larger rotors up front if they fit compared to the rear. I mean there are still lots of cars out there that have drums in the back and rotors up front.

Where did you find the information and pricing on the StopTek kit?

Everything was on the Stoptech Website. Look around there, because they have a lot to offer if you are interested. It would be about $4,200 for the smaller rotor in front, and about $4,700 for the larger ones (including the rear in the pricing as well).

Nevermind, I just found out that I would nedd 18" wheels to fit 14" rotors. I guess I will stick with the 13" rotors.

Jon what you are proposing would be one pricey ordeal...my next rotors are gonna be the cryogenically-treated (frozen) rotors.

The Tire Rack (www.tirerack.com) carries a 13" Brembo big brake upgrade for $2,875. This kit is comparable to the StopTech kit but for a better price than they are quoting you.

True, but that is only for the fronts. The Stoptech kit for only the front is $2K. I cannot seem to find that Brembo makes any rear brakes for my car. Stoptech sells the rears as well for a total price of $4,200.

I didn't realize that the price included the rears as well. That's a very good price. I don't think Brembo makes a rear brake kit for your car. However, I am not sure that you need that much braking power in the rear. From what I understand, the fronts do a majority of the braking, so upgrading the brake lines and pads in the rear may be sufficient.

Admittedly, I am a novice at best when it comes to mechanics, but what exactly is the benefit of changing from large AMG rotors to large Brembo rotors? I can understand upgrading the pads or replacing with stainless brake lines so your pressure is constant. insight?

I can't see the added expense in a car that is what eight years old now and is a weekend car for me....at any rate. The advantage to SS lines is that they do not flex like the factory OEM lines...thus the pedal feel will be firmer, per se.. For me, the next time I do the front brakes I'm purchasing the cryo treated ones, as I stated earlier.

Check with Porterfield and see what they have.

and yeah, StapleGun the cryo-treated rotors are worth the extra money for the treatment - last way, way longer than same rotor non-treated.

VAamg, assuming the Brembo rotor is the same size as the AMG rotor, the benefit to changing to the Brembo rotor is its ability to dissipate heat. Heat buildup in the brake system causes brake fade, which decreases braking performance. Because the Brembo rotors are two piece rotors that are cross drilled and/or slotted, they will disspiate heat much better than your AMG rotors. I am not sure what size your AMG rotors are, but I think the Brembo rotors may be larger, thus increasing braking performance. Also, the Brembo kit, or the StopTech one for that matter, includes not just the rotors, but also larger 4 piston calipers, brake lines, pads, and mounting hardware.

I havethe Brakeman Rotors and Calipers and they work extremely well and have sort of a Ti color anodized into the aluminum calipers and rotor hats.

Plus they flat stop you and will save you some 30lbs of brake wt. Their rotors are double heat treated and don't seem to wear hardly at all. I had them double heat treat the rear rotors and slot them, so now they are not wearing away and look very nice with the slots and porterfield pads in the rear.
