C36 miss fire

a couple weeks ago the car started to miss fire, when i reved it it dissapeared.the next morning i started it,it sounded like it was running on 5 cyclinders.I took it to the mechanic and they said that the 6th coil covering the spark plug had blown,so they replaced it and put brand new spark plugs just to be sure.He drove it,it was fine then it started again. Then he said the engine was blown,i told he was talking ****,I did not believe that the motor was gone,i got the car towed 2 a differnt place, were they are currently stripping the motor to try and find the problem. The problem in south africa is that their are no good merc mechanics!.Any help would be appreciated thanx

i can bet money it's one of the oxygen sensors
i've had that happen to me in the past, they even replaced coil packs with no luck, and then i found it was an oxygen sensor that was on the way out, not fully bad, but getting close that was creating the missfire, once replaced no problems at all, might want to check that before spending any money on expensive stuff gl

i have a C43, so i'm not too familiar with the C36, but do you have a "check engine" light come on? is it possible to check the problem with an OBD or OBD II scanner?

My W201 had a similar set of symptoms. It was bad plug wire that was arcing on the valve cover gasket. It only happened at lower RPMs.

Dunno if his car will have that - the OBD is a US requirement, and he's in Africa. Sounds like a plug wire arcing, open the hood at night and look for it. If you hear muffled and sharp and rapid tick, tick, tick...it's what the jumping spark will sound like.

Basics first, compression and cylinder leakage tests. After you find that out you will be able to proceed.

Each coil in the C36 serves 2 cylinders. The rubber boot that is the connector from the coil directly to the cylinder below the coil frequently fails and causes the exact symptoms you describe. If plugs are changed, these should also be changed, as ham-fisted mechanics can screw them up just pulling the coils off. Replace these 3 connectors first. If you still have an issue, replace the wire set and the other 3 (they are different). They are cheap.

This is assuming, of course, that your compression test is OK.

I'd say it's time to replace the mechanic.
